An Amazon adventure leads to massive fish for Minnesotans

Adam Van Tassell and his 13-year-old son, Brock, are experts in exotic fishing travel. They’ve been to Brazil, Costa Rica, Belize, and other destinations around the world for once-in-a-lifetime fishing experiences.
Not surprisingly, the father-son duo’s YouTube fishing channel motto is, “We live to fish.” But this winter the Van Tassells had an adventure in the Amazon that surpassed even their own lofty standards. Adam Van Tassell hooked into and landed a fire peacock bass (Cichla miraenae) that he believes is the biggest ever caught. Here’s how two Minnesotans came out of the Amazon alive, with a record fish to boot.

Minnesotan participates in World Ice Fishing Championship in Mongolia

How many American anglers have ice-fished in Mongolia? Not many.
First, there’s the 34-hour flight to the other side of the world. Then, there’s 50 inches of ice to drill through. And that’s just the start of the culture shock … you may be served marmot for supper.
Yet Minnesota native Sean Warner, of Andover, earned precisely these bragging rights in March. He traveled across 13 time zones (flying Minneapolis- Chicago-Istanbul-Ulaanbaatar, followed by a 500-km drive) to fish for Team Norway at the 20th World Ice Fishing Championship.

North-country resident takes on hunting, fishing for survival on reality TV show

Imagine being dropped off in the remote Canadian wilderness with no food and only 10 pieces of gear. Your task is to survive as long as you can while competing against other extreme survivalists. Last one out wins – with a $500,000 grand prize. Would you say “Pfff … that’s just on TV,” or would you go sign up?
Ann Rosenquist, who grew up in Lutsen and Grand Marais, Minn., and now lives in Bayfield, Wis., took this challenge seriously.
