No boat needed: Here’s how to surfcast the Sunshine State

Florida is blessed with 825 miles of sandy beaches. The southernmost state in the Lower 48 is a vacation destination for tourists searching for some wave riding, sun soaking, shell hunting and, of course, surfcasting.
There is always something biting in the surf off the beach. And it just requires a simple setup and some patience.

Tricks from days gone by still put pike on the ice

My father was an avid ice angler long before sonar, portable shelters, and high-powered gas augers.
He used cup augers and even chisel spuds to chop holes in the ice, and his rods consisted of 2-inch dowel rod that had two nails hammered into the side about 14 inches apart, with heavy nylon braided line wrapped around the two spikes. The old man was a master pike angler who slid many a huge northern pike onto the ice in his day.

A quick chat with NRA president Bill Bachenberg

On April 28, at its 154th annual meeting, the board of directors of the National Rifle Association of America elected Bill Bachenberg of Pennsylvania as president.

In accepting the position, Bachenberg said, “We are at a pivotal point in our association’s history as we work to reach new members, re-build the trust of existing members, and provide the gold-standard programs that American gun owners expect.”
Outdoor News asked Bachenberg what paths led to him being entrusted with the keys to such an important group.

Here are the best ways to dodge danger in snake country

Four of us were heading to the spot where prairie dogs had built a hefty community and the landowner needed them thinned. Halfway there, we heard the telltale sound of a rattlesnake, and – with no one needing to utter a word or a sound – we all froze.
When the group’s movement stopped, so did the rattle, and I asked if anyone knew where the snake was lying. No one was sure, but no one was about to move to find out.

Expanding handgun options available for Federal’s .30 Super Carry cartridge

There are more than 22 million concealed carry permit holders in the United States. Compared to the 2.7 million in 1999, it’s clear that new laws allowing citizens to more easily carry weapons for personal protection have created a huge demand for pistols and accessories.

There has been ample debate over what is the perfect carry handgun and caliber, but it comes down to personal preference. The most popular caliber likely is the 9 mm, but the .45 would be a close second, followed by the .380.
A round that has gained in popularity during the past two years is one that Federal designed for the person who prefers a round in the range of a .380 or 9mm. The relatively new release is the .30 Super Carry.

The latest strategies for controlling (or at least surviving) biting insects afield

It was last July and I was hiking on Stockton Island (Apostle Islands National Lakeshore) with my wife and Joan, a friend of ours. After criss-crossing through the forest on the well-worn trails, we returned to the boat to take us back to Madeline Island where we began our search for ticks.

It’s going to be an awesome Minnesota opener, just ask Mr. Walleye

Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Famer “Mr. Walleye,” Gary Roach, will turn 87 on Aug. 3. When you consider that his mother was probably on the water with a fishing rod in hand while carrying this fishing legend in her womb, he can probably brag that he has participated in every fishing opener in Minnesota for the past 88 years.
During a recent conversation, Roach and I discussed how this year’s early ice-out and a lack of ice-fishing pressure this past winter might affect walleye-angler success on opening day and for the first few weeks after that.
