The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) approved the purchase of 30 acres, the sale of 20 acres, and exchange of two small parcels at its last meeting.

Well-known albino buck from Spooner, Wis., area found dead after nearly 15-year history

It was a dark, rainy morning when Washburn County Highway Commissioner Brian Danielsen called a homeowner at the intersection of county roads A and H in the Burnett County town of Scott.
“It’s the end of an era,” he said. “The King is dead. We found him this morning.”
For the past 14 or 15 years, the “King” has been a majestic albino white-tailed buck living in the area.

Wisconsin State Roundup: DNR responds to allegations by former wardens of bias and harassment

Veteran outdoors reporter Tim Eisele wrote a Commentary in the last issue touching on potential issues in the DNR’s Bureau of Law Enforcement following reports by Laura Schulte of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel of allegations by several former wardens of bias and harassment.
At the time of that deadline no response had been received from the DNR or governor’s office. Katie Grant, DNR communications director, has since replied.

Wisconsin deer hunters supply legislators with long list of overall grievances

Following another disappointing gun season, about 150 hunters from northern Wisconsin gathered at a legislator-sponsored listening session to vent their frustrations at the Woodruff Town Hall Thursday, Dec. 21.
A common theme heard from the more than 20 hunters who spoke during the two-hour session was there are too many predators on the landscape. Other issues included the lack of quality deer habitat across the northern forest and the dropping interest in deer hunting – especially in northern Wisconsin.

Protected in parts of Pennsylvania, brown trout have a bounty on them in stretch of Colorado River

The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission last November adopted a change to trout-harvesting regulations on 12 streams located in eastern and central parts of the state.
The law, known as a “miscellaneous special regulation,” protects wild brown trout in some Class A wild trout stream sections.
Ironically, across the country, on a stretch of the Colorado River in Glen Canyon National Park, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, working with the National Park Service, has placed a bounty on brown trout with the Brown Trout Incentivized Harvest program.

Prairie chicken quandary getting Minnesota DNR’s attention

Minnesota DNR officials have seen a steady decline in the prairie chicken population in northwestern Minnesota in recent years.
Emily Hutchins, DNR Erskine assistant area wildlife manager, said there are numerous factors causing the decline, including weather, habitat, and management. Along with the population drop, the DNR is seeing more hybrids of prairie chickens and sharp-tailed grouse, which makes the future of prairie chickens in Minnesota unpredictable.
