Steve Carney: For quick, consistent way to cook ducks, try the spatchcock method of cooking

A year ago, I started cooking waterfowl using the “spatchcock” style of cooking. This style involves cooking the birds in a flat manner – not the traditional whole-bird method. Spatchcock cooking was used in the 18th century and is of Irish origin.

Questions surround ice-fishing tournaments in Minnesota due to poor conditions

Imagine it’s early January and you’re getting ready to go fishing. Typically, you’re packing ice-fishing rods, a portable shelter, an ice auger, and a fish finder.

Ice rescues on Upper Red, Lake of the Woods drowning are low points in difficult ice-fishing season in Minnesota

On Monday, Mike Burville rang in the New Year by cutting a few holes through the ice on 547-acre First Silver Lake just north of Battle Lake in Otter Tail County.
Burville wanted to dust off his ice-fishing gear, but in a responsible way. A smaller lake would have better ice conditions, he thought, unlike some of the county’s larger waters that remain open in some areas. His scouting paid off.

Walleye experiment ends on Iosco’s Five Channels Impoundment in Michigan

Close to 50,000 spring walleye fingerlings have been stocked in Iosco County’s Five Channels Impoundment since 2017.
But following 2022’s plant of 22,766 fingerlings, the DNR ended the stocking program on the 237-acre impoundment on the Au Sable River in Iosco County. The stocking report on the impoundment says, “natural reproduction is sufficient to provide a small walleye fishery,” said DNR Fisheries Biologist Matt Klungle.
