Gear and gadgets can’t fully replace woodsmanship in the outdoors

With all of the technological advancements available to hunters today, it leaves many outdoorsmen and women seeking to find ways to shoot at animals further away or see when and where they are moving at specific times in specific areas.

Commentary: An an out-of-control wolf population and Michigan’s vanishing Upper Peninsula deer herd

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula sportsmen’s groups have been sounding the alarm – to no avail – concerning the destruction caused by the uncontrolled wolf population. The 2023 U.P. deer harvest is on track to break yet another worst-year record.
Hunting is a billion-dollar industry in Michigan, and much of that revenue is spent in the U.P. We will definitely take a hit with lost jobs and revenue due to poor wildlife management in the U.P.

Based on the Michigan DNR’s 2022 Deer Harvest Survey Report compiled by DNR statistician Brian Frawley, about 14% of the hunters who shot deer that year did not comply with the mandatory reporting requirement – the first year the state required mandatory reporting.
The estimated harvest from surveys sent to a random sample of deer hunters was 339,189 compared to 297,132 kills that were reported, a difference of 42,057.
