Minnesota DNR commissioner reviews first year of state’s ‘4 The Outdoors’ plan

The conversation started in 2021 when the Minnesota DNR introduced a program called “4 The Outdoors” at its annual roundtable event. The program was described as four steps in four years (officially beginning in 2023) to ensure future funding for conservation and outdoor recreation in Minnesota.

Fast forward to today, and DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen says she’s happy with where the DNR is finishing up the first year of the four-year process.

Jeff Frischkorn: Our angling and hunting lives are but a short glimpse

It was cold. More than enough cold, in fact, for someone who hadn’t felt the touch of a deer-gun-season winter day in a number of years.
Try three, or maybe it’s been four. Possibly five. I know more than three years because it was November 2021 when I shot my last Ohio whitetail. And that was with my crossbow. Ditto with 2020, and nothing by any means in 2019. So, I guess, it’s been at least several years. That’s terrible, I must admit.

Streams of Thought: Wolf saga in Midwestern states takes another turn

Recent developments probably won’t find those who advocate for state management of the federally protected species in a celebratory mood. As this edition of Outdoor News headed to the print shop, we awaited information from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that will make for a dandy report in the upcoming edition.
Just to offer you a flavor: On Dec. 14, the Center for Biological Diversity announced that a federal court settlement will require the USFWS to draft a new recovery plan for gray wolves listed under the Endangered Species Act.

Jessie Lake in Minnesota’s Itasca County a go-to destination during walleye and crappie boom years

From a fish population standpoint, most lakes across Minnesota move through cyclical trends. This simply means there are good years and poor years based on the year-classes and age structures of a given fish species.
Itasca County’s Jessie Lake also follows that course, especially with its walleyes and crappies, for which it’s most noted. But when those numbers are up, Jessie is a definite go-to lake in the Grand Rapids area.
