Minnesota’s pheasant hunt receives high grades this season

Is there a growing schism within the pheasant-hunting community?
Probably not, but there definitely are hunters who, during this oddly mild December, are haunted by visions of snow and cattails … and roosters. There also is a cadre of those who’ve been rejoicing that Ma Nature has provided a late season that doesn’t remotely resemble last year’s overly white version.

Harvest dips for Minnesota’s 2023 late-season CWD management hunt

Minnesota’s late CWD hunt took place this past weekend, Dec. 15-17, in seven 600 Series deer permit areas and one in the 300 Series DPAs. The Minnesota DNR saw a decrease in harvest from last year’s CWD hunt.
Todd Froberg, DNR big-game program coordinator, said this year’s harvest during the special disease-management hunt totaled 559 deer, compared with last year’s harvest total of 610. He added that the total deer harvest in 2023 is still 8% lower than last year’s total.

Trip to Lower Peninsula’s Torch Lake provides unique opportunity to catch Atlantic salmon and perch

I’ve been doing a fair number of two-species fishing trips in recent years, where we fish for one target species for a while, then switch gears and try for something else.
In the spring, for instance, we often fish walleyes on the Detroit River and after we boat our limits, we’ll finish off the day chasing white bass. Earlier this month I had a rather unique trip on Michigan’s Torch Lake where we fished for two totally different targets using two different techniques at the same time; we fished for perch and Atlantic salmon.

A mobile mussels lab starts in Maryland aimed at restoring populations in the Susquehanna River

A new Maryland Department of Natural Resources project is aiming at raising imperiled freshwater mussels and restoring them to waters of the Susquehanna River basin – all from the back of a trailer.
The department’s Mobile Mussel Propagation Trailer began operations this October. It’s currently parked in Susquehanna State Park and is raising juvenile mussels from the Susquehanna River, where the mollusks play an important role in filtering water.

Higher yielding varieties of switchgrass could mean more wildlife habitat

This summer, the Association of Warm Season Grass Producers planted three test plots with six varieties of switchgrass and big bluestem. The plots were planted on the Bruce Trumbower farm in Hunlock Creek, and they will be monitored for disease resistance, establishment and yield.
