Steve Carney: What was behind a disappointing Minnesota duck hunting season?

The 2023 waterfowling season mercifully came to an end last weekend.
This season rates as one of the toughest I have ever experienced, and I worked about as hard as possible to harvest the ducks I did. The final few weeks, I have heard various theories about the 2023 season. Like, “The ducks already have moved through the state,” or, “There are tons of ducks still in Canada.” It’s hard to know what to believe.

Minnesota man cited in Brainerd-area deer case

Conservation Officer Cadet Jamus Veit, who’s training with Conservation Officer Jim Guida, of Brainerd, Minn., received a Turn In Poachers call on Nov. 10 regarding multiple deer that were killed and left on a property near Brainerd.
The case could result in license revocation, fines, and restitution paid by John David Trebtoske, 67, of McGrath, according to the Minnesota DNR Enforcement Division.

New dollars for Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources to enhance habitat

A Minnesota land-and-water conservation agency is preparing to roll out a new multi-million-dollar voluntary program to improve soil health on agricultural lands that state officials hope will also improve water quality and wildlife habitat.
The Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources is slated to receive $25 million in Regional Conservation Partnership Program funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resource Conservation Service.

Minnesota’s CWD tally hits 23 positives this fall

The Minnesota DNR reported a jump in chronic wasting disease-positive deer cases on its website last Wednesday. The number of confirmed CWD-positive samples increased from three deer to 20 from 11,542 samples. Three more positive cases were identified on Monday, bringing the total to 23.
Among the three added on Monday was an adult buck harvested during the opening weekend of firearms season near Wabasha in southeastern Minnesota. It’s the first positive case in Deer Permit Area 342.

Commentary: It’s time to bring back Illinois’ deer check stations

On the opening weekend of firearms deer season in Illinois, I made the rounds, checking in to hear all the great deer stories.
I stopped at processors to see how the numbers looked and to get a look at what was coming in. Over and over I heard a constant refrain this year – the same as I hear every year: “I sure wish we still had check stations.”

Treestand falls, fatalities in 2023 on pace to top recent deer seasons in Illinois

Illinois CPOs have already reported two hunting-related fatalities related to treestands during the 2023 deer season.
One fatality occurred when a hunter fell 15 feet from a ladder stand. The second involved a hunter who was found deceased at the base of his stand. The cause of death has not been reported, but the hunter had been reported missing for several hours.
