Wisconsin’s Northern Forest whitetail kill down 27% on opener, statewide harvest down 16%

The Wisconsin DNR’s pre-season predictions for a lower deer kill over the gun season’s opening weekend harvest proved to be accurate.
“We expected to see a lower harvest than last year after reviewing the bow season’s results, so the numbers aren’t a surprise,” said Jeff Pritzl, the DNR’s deer program specialist.
Statewide, the overall harvest was down 16% from last year and 10% below the five-year average.

Record-book buck highlights opener during New York’s Southern Zone deer season

New York’s Southern Zone opening day featured favorable weather, if not a bit on the cold side, across most of the state, bringing plenty of hunters out for the state’s biggest hunting day of the year.
For Jeremy Williams, of Tioga Center in Tioga County, it was the biggest hunting day of his life.  Williams got a second chance at a massive 12-point typical buck he’d missed while bowhunting last season.

Rare elk sighting in Lyon County captured on game cameras from southwestern Minnesota

Tim Meyer was flipping through his game cameras from his southwest Minnesota property on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 21. He got halfway through the photos and suddenly something took his breath away.
It was a five-by-five bull elk. Meyer never expected to see an elk on his property, and he’ll keep the photos because he’s confident he’ll never see one on his land again.

New York’s Niagara River facing another threat with proposed hydrokinetic turbine

The awesome Niagara River, connecting Lake Erie with Lake Ontario, is one of my favorite bodies of water to fish. The lower Niagara River is the stretch from the Cataracts of Niagara to Fort Niagara, offering one of the most diverse selections of warm and cold water fish species on the planet.
The upper Niagara River, from Buffalo to Niagara Falls, is an entirely different fishery, but every bit as productive.

Streams of Thought: Liza the Lab hunts with her pups, and the nut didn’t fall far from the tree

Soon, Liza the Lab and I will again head afield, hoping to roust the pheasants that a day ago largely evaded her nose and the noses of two other Labs as they combed the grasslands of southwestern Minnesota. It’s cooler today, and damp. I sense good things in our future.
