Now it begins: The rut is just getting started

Just about all deer experts, both hunters and the science-based research variety, agree that the breeding between female and male whitetails can be broken down into three separate phases.
First is the “pre rut,” which is called by some as the chasing phase. This is not when bucks are following does that are close to their 24–36-hour estrous period, but rather a timeframe when days shorten, and bucks are first feeling the oncoming urge to secure the passing of their genetic makeup. This phase includes heavy rubbing, scape making, locking antlers with other bucks and chasing both younger deer and older females for short distances. These signs and actions may be noticed at any time now when afield.

Proposing a ‘Plan B’ for Pennsylvania’s fall trout stocking

I was present on a small mountain stream when the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission’s truck arrived for the creek’s scheduled fall stocking. The air was crisp and held that intoxicating autumn tang – a beautiful October day to be outdoors. The pleasant conditions, though, accented the absence of the long line of pickups that follow a stock trout in spring. Only one vehicle trailed that load of trout upstream.

Wisconsin DNR’s Deer Program Specialist says aging deer hunter scene concerning

Orange is still the color linked to the gun deer season, but gray is solidly in second place. Gray, as in beards and hair color of aging hunters.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Deer Program Specialist Jeff Pritzl said the agency started collecting data on deer hunter ages in 2005. At that time, 43 was the year-of-age with the greatest number of hunters. Last year it was 60. He said in five years the year-of-age with the greatest number of hunters will likely be 65.
“This is not unique to Wisconsin,” Pritzl said. “Especially the eastern whitetail states. This is just showing the baby boomer generation washing ashore.”

Largemouth bass consume carp in Illinois River, but hopes they could reduce invasive carp are doubtful

There is new evidence that largemouth bass regularly dine on silver carp in the Illinois River, a finding that could potentially help manage invasive fish.
Potentially being the key word here. There are plenty of caveats: bass in the La Grange Pool of the river appear to be rather picky about portion size – they prefer silver carp that are roughly 40% to 45% their own size. Also, there are plenty of other food options in the river that largemouths prefer. In summary, scientists investigating the possibility of “carp cleaning bass” are mostly doubtful.

New York’s Oneida Lake delivers at kayak bass invitational

Bailey Eigbrett, 25, of Buffalo, led a field of 64 kayak anglers from across the state as the inaugural New York Invitational was held on Oneida Lake Oct. 7. Eigbrett’s best five bass, based on length using the Tourney X smart phone app, was 93.5 inches.
There are six kayak bass fishing circuits in the Empire State and the top team for the tournament was the Slay Nation of Upstate NY group. Each circuit was invited to bring its top 10 anglers for the first-time event, and the top 25 bass caught by those 10 anglers for the day became the team’s score.

Lake sturgeon release is a win-win event as recovery efforts continue in Michigan

Excited, kids and their parents lined up along the edge of the parking lot of the Caldwell Boat Launch on the Tittabawassee River at Midland, Mich., ready to liberate baby lake sturgeon.
Many dozen strong, they’d listened to Justin Chiotti of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service present a primer on the sturgeon, a long abused and neglected Michigan native species for which a recovery effort has been mounted, including the imminent release. The specially designed hatchery truck contained about 500 young sturgeon, bound for the Tittabawassee, Shiawassee, Cass, and Flint rivers, tributaries of the Saginaw River, which flows into Saginaw Bay.

The RV craze is fading quickly; What’s going on?

With sales of RVs at their lowest tide since 2015 – with a decline of something like $10 billion in just the past year alone – it might be time to rethink the whole idea of the RV lifestyle activity.
And the full-time RVing couple has come up with several reasons why they believe many once-owners are now the “been there and done that” crowd. Kyle and Olivia Brady operate the social media platform-based “Drivin & Vibin” RVing tell-all. Their take on RVing is bolstered in some regard to what the industry says.
