Minnesota deer hunters reminded to know trail closure rules in state forests

Recreational use of off-highway vehicles will be restricted on some state forest trails and access routes during the upcoming firearms deer hunting season, according to the Minnesota DNR. The restrictions – which do not apply to state forest roads – aim to protect recreational riders from unsafe riding conditions and avoid potential conflicts between deer hunters and riders.

Minnesota DNR field reports 2023: Here’s what wildlife managers say firearms deer hunters can expect

More than 400,000 deer hunters are preparing for the firearms deer season, which opens Saturday, Nov. 4. The season offers opportunities to spend time outdoors with friends and family, find adventure, and put venison in the freezer.
Deer hunting is the primary tool used to manage deer populations, and hunters help keep deer numbers in line with population goals across the state. Managing deer populations contributes to the overall health of Minnesota’s landscapes, natural systems, and economy.

Local knowledge is of utmost value when it comes to understanding lakes

I’ve been working on lakes for more than 40 years, and one thing I’ve learned is that not all knowledge comes from books. The best tips, observations, and insights have come from longtime anglers and lake observers. It’s local knowledge.

Little Bearskin Lake (Wisconsin) had a lot of shoreline log cabins, and I asked why. The backstory was that at the turn of the century, loggers went on strike, and the boomed logs on the lake froze into the ice over winter.

Minnesota’s fall fish bite has been late in arriving

Many anglers suffer through the months of August and September in hopes of a renewed fall bite that sometimes shows up and sometimes doesn’t.
Back in the day, the fall bite always started on Labor Day weekend. Nowadays, the good fishing doesn’t seem to ramp up until mid-October, and sometimes later than that. Maybe it’s extended warm weather in fall.
