Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Lake committee discusses fall net surveys, winter regulations

The Mille Lacs Fisheries Advisory Committee met on Monday, Oct. 16, at McQuoid’s Inn, in Isle to receive updates on Lake Mille Lacs fisheries and provide input on upcoming winter regulations.
There was plenty of discussion among committee members and the Minnesota DNR staff to determine the right path for a successful harvest this winter, but also balancing the open-water season in 2024. Eric Jensen, the DNR’s large lake specialist for Mille Lacs, started the meeting with findings from the fall netting and creel survey. He said the population estimates weren’t yet complete, but the staff is hoping to have those findings available in the next few weeks.

State, tribal hunters combine to kill 18 elk so far during Minnesota season

The state’s 2023 elk-hunting season ended Oct. 15 and the Karlstad-area wildlife office saw record-breaking elk during the past month and a half. Red Lake Nation is also amid its elk-hunting season and has seen success as well.
The state DNR gave out 17 licenses to Minnesotans, and 11 hunters had a successful hunt, for a 65% success rate, according to Jason Wollin, the DNR’s Karlstad area wildlife supervisor. Al Pemberton, director of the Red Lake Department of Natural Resources, said Red Lake Nation members have harvested seven bulls, with Dec. 31 being the end of the hunting season.

The Kentucky long rifle: America’s first contribution to firearm engineering

The use and development of firearms has been vital to the survival and prosperity of our nation since the first permanent English colony was established more than 400 years ago in what is now Virginia. These settlers brought with them the best available firearms, which they knew would be needed to defend the colony and provide food from the new world’s wild game.
Those early smoothbore matchlocks and wheellocks were replaced during the following decades by guns with rifling developed in Germany and Switzerland, and the flintlock mechanism that was developed in France, which contains the trigger, sear, mainspring and frizzen.

Grayling to be released in two of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula inland lakes

For the first time in more than a century, Arctic grayling soon will be swimming in Michigan public waters as part of the ongoing Michigan Arctic Grayling Initiative.
That program seeks to establish a self-sustaining, naturally reproducing grayling population in several Michigan rivers. For the past four years the DNR has been collecting eggs and rearing fish in the state fish hatchery system in an effort to move that program forward. The rearing efforts have resulted in a relatively small number of leftover brood stock grayling. They average about 15 inches in length. The DNR plans to release a few hundred of them later this fall into two Upper Peninsula lakes.

A look at Lake Erie’s aliens and ‘spooky’ creatures

Halloween reminds some of Lake Erie’s strangest and spookiest creatures. Some are native to the Great Lakes, but others are by definition, “aliens” from elsewhere after being carried in ships or swimming through the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Although there are smaller species of harmless native lampreys, the sea lamprey gained entrance into the four upper Great Lakes by swimming through the St. Lawrence Seaway. Nicknamed the vampire eel, parasitic lampreys have a round, tooth-filled mouth instead of true jaws like eels that rasp holes through the skin or scales of other fish to “drink” their bodily fluids.
