Notes off a soiled cuff: 71-year old Pennsylvania hunter grateful for opportunities with a crossbow

The once bitter debate about whether crossbow use should be allowed in the fall archery deer season has cooled a lot in recent years because so many hunters use them to enjoy the autumn woods.
Longtime reader Dave Lewis, of Chicora, Pa., is grateful to the Game Commission for making the decision more than a decade ago to allow crossbows in bow season.
“There has been so much angry discussion on the topic of crossbows over the years – and say what you want – but on Saturday, Sept. 30, this 71-year-old man got his third very worthy buck with a crossbow in the last 12 years,” he said. “Without crossbows, that would not be physically possible for me – and many like me.”

Video: Use a kayak to beat tough winds for whitetail scouting

Kayaks are a great tool for whitetail hunters.
They are popular for helping people go deeper into areas as a way to avoid hunting pressure, and for better access into locations without bumping deer out. In this short video below, Eric Morken details how he likes to use his NuCanoe Frontier 12 kayak for scouting in mid-to-late October when west-based winds would otherwise blow his scent into bedding areas if he were to scout by moving through the timber on foot.

Michigan House bill would allow for commercial harvest of several game fish species

Ann Arbor Democratic state Rep. Jason Morgan wants to expand state licensed commercial fishing to several species of game fish, but Michigan United Conservation Clubs is mobilizing to prevent that from happening.
Morgan introduced House Bill 5108 in mid-October to allow for the commercial take of lake trout, smallmouth bass, panfish, walleye, perch and other game fish, many of which are reared and stocked using funds from recreational anglers via license sales and federal excise taxes on fishing equipment. The legislation follows a similar effort in 2019 that was ultimately defeated with strong opposition from Michigan United Conservation Clubs and others.

Top ice fishing shows across Iowa, the Midwest are nearing

How can an outdoor person get bored here in northwest Iowa? Right now we have hunting seasons going like crazy, the fall fishing is only getting better as the lake water temperatures fall. And that’s not all. The “pre-ice fishing craze” is just around the corner.
It always comes in early November and into December across the Midwest…major ice fishing shows such as the Dakota Angler Ice Institute in Sioux Falls, S.D., (Nov. 10-12) and the St. Paul Ice Show (Dec. 1-3) in Minnesota. They are always fun to attend, but right here in northern Iowa we will have four ice fishing open houses that are close by and have lots to offer.

Looking back at New York’s Adirondack bush pilots of yesteryear

When I was a kid, I was lucky to go along with my father and a friend of his to set up the annual hunting camp at New York’s West Canada Lake. We flew in with veteran Eagle Bay bush pilot Bud Windhausen who picked us up at a place called Shallow Shore, in Speculator.
This was a great trip for me to be back in that remote country in the early fall before the start of hunting season with a chill in the air and leaves beginning to fall. One night we borrowed the ranger’s big flashlight and spotted five- and ten-pound lake trout spawning in shallow water next to the boat not far from the ranger cabin.
