Pennsylvania’s Scotia Barrens in Centre County is teeming with outdoor opportunity

Just northeast of State College lies a 6,500-acre geological wonder. This area is known as the Scotia Barrens.
Offering many outdoor recreational opportunities, the location is a unique “frost pocket” in which currents of air are trapped as they drift down into lower lying areas. This effect creates extreme temperature differentials, which may cause the area to be cooler than the places surrounding it.

Star Watch: The incredible Andromeda Galaxy

Astronomers tell us that there are billions of galaxies in the Universe besides our own Milky Way. The Andromeda Galaxy is special though, because it’s the only other galaxy that we can see from Earth with the naked eye. Scientists tell us that it may contain up to a trillion stars, more than the 200 billion or so found in our Milky Way.

Taste of the wild: Venison shank tacos with wild rose hips

I get asked all the time about the easiest recipe for venison that I have. For a long time, I didn’t really have an answer. Now, I have an answer to that question.
This will be my go-to for venison shanks from here on out. For me, there is nothing easier than dumping ingredients into a crockpot and leaving them. In its most basic form, this recipe could be venison shanks, ham hock, salt, pepper, and chicken stock.

Bear seasons hold great promise, according to Pennsylvania Game Commission

If you hunt Pennsylvania black bears, maybe for years without harvesting one, now is not the time to give up hope.
It’s true the odds of tagging a bear can seem long. Only somewhere between 1.5% and 2.5% of bear license holders get a bear in any given year. But bears are again plentiful and widespread across Pennsylvania, with an estimated 15,000 roaming the woods. The 2023 seasons are long and varied, offering lots of opportunities, including hunting on three Sundays.

Commentary: Hunters need input into game Pennsylvania commissioner selections

The topic of state legislators involved in Pennsylvania Game Commission issues is not likely to go away until the real issue of the dynamic between hunters in Pennsylvania and the Game Commission is resolved.
Some claim it is dangerous for legislators to become involved in Game Commission issues and others feel the only way to rein in the agency is through legislation.
