Iowa’s fur-harvester seasons just around the corner

Fur trappers and hunters in Iowa are making final preparations for the 2023 fur-harvester seasons that open Saturday, Nov. 4.
What will this year bring? To gain a true picture of fur-harvester data and population trends, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) monitors population trends of Iowa furbearer species in three different ways: 1) annual fur-harvest reports, 2) the spring spotlight survey and 3) the Iowa bowhunter observation survey. The result is an annual report entitled “Trends in Iowa Furbearer Populations and Harvest.”

Public access provides unique opportunity in a managed forest in the Adirondacks

The state-owned public lands that contrive the Adirondack Forest Preserve are not managed for timber. What’s known as the “Forever Wild” clause of the state Constitution prohibits timber harvesting on these lands, including Catskill Forest Preserve Lands.
The Adirondacks do remain appealing to the hunter who appreciates the challenge and especially the beauty they offer. But unless you’re hunting private lands – including conservation easements – your chances of doing so in a young forest habitat situation are quite slim.

Nature Smart: Photographing polar bears in Manitoba, the world’s largest land predator

After almost 10 years, I returned to one of my favorite places to film and photograph the world’s largest land predator – an animal so big that the adult males can weigh upwards of 1,500 pounds. That’s right, you read that correctly: I’m talking about the polar bear (Ursus maritimus).
A decade ago, I photographed polar bears in early winter, when snow blanketed the ground. It was cold; several mornings were -32 F. This time, I went in mid-September, hoping to see the tundra in autumn splendor. I got lucky and hit the fall colors perfectly, and the polar bears didn’t disappoint, either.

Backyard and Beyond: A look at the turning season

Anyone lucky enough to encounter a cecropia moth will doubtless never forget it. These huge moths, the largest in North America, stretch as wide as your stretched-out hand. And they’re spectacularly gorgeous: Just look at the one Gary Krause discovered resting on his backyard tree.
