Michigan’s Wings of Freedom pheasant hunt a hit with veterans

Rob Loniewsky didn’t know what to expect when his neighbor, a 75-year-old veteran, asked him to spend a day at the Wings of Freedom pheasant hunt near Morley.
But he wasn’t about to miss a chance to close rank.
“He’s been going for a couple years,” said Loniewsky after downing a grilled burger with fellow veterans, law enforcement personnel, and first responders. “Honestly, I came because I thought it would provide a good time to spend with him. Then the atmosphere was wonderful, super friendly, kind of a community thing.”

Video: Filling a Minnesota doe tag, and why this location also sets up well for bucks

It has been a warm start to the archery deer season in Minnesota, but temperatures in the mid-30s on the morning of Oct. 7 made for a beautiful day to be in the woods.
Eric Morken of Outdoor News was able to fill one of his bonus tags on a doe. In this video, Morken discusses shot placement on whitetails, how a new broadhead performed and why this specific location sets up so well for both general deer movement, as well as for buck movement once they start looking for does in late October and into November.

Commentary: Of worms and deers and trees. What’s the connection here?

There’s a surprising and highly influential link between invasive earthworms, whitetailed deer, and tree harvesting in northern forests, according to new research from the University of Minnesota.
The findings, recently published open access in the journal Ecology, show invasive earthworm populations increase with deer presence and decrease with tree harvesting. Increased earthworm invasion is cause for concern because the species is known to harm soil and regenerating trees.

Ohio’s Madison Lake holds its own for crappies, largemouths

Madison Lake in central Ohio was formed for recreational purposes in 1946 by damming Deer Creek.
And, although it’s not far from Deer Creek Lake and its fine fishery, Madison holds its own on the fishing spectrum, particularly for largemouth bass, says Ethan Simmons, a fisheries biologist for the ODNR Division of Wildlife in Columbus. It’s also a pretty good crappie lake now that the 9-inch keeper requirement has been lifted.
