The Old Guy, for some time, had not been able to verbalize it because, he thought, if he did, if he said it out loud, it would become real. Reality would be a problem, with duck season and deer season on the horizon, and after that, next year, the turkey season. And in between all that, trout fishing.
But saying it is vastly different than thinking it. To begin with, the Old Guy didn’t have to say anything, did not have to form words. But he could not control his thoughts, even if he was at war with them. Even if the idea was painful.
