Delaware River Basin Commission gets an infusion to help meet clean water goals

The Delaware River Basin Commission received $715,000 in federal funding that will help the organization meet its clean water goals and manage for floods and droughts.
The money is from an omnibus funding bill that Congress passed in December 2022 to keep the federal government funded through 2023. Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J., secured the funds for the commission, which relies on grants and special project funding to fill budget gaps.

Star Watch: Our Galaxy, the Milky Way

The dictionary defines a “galaxy” as a system of millions or billions of stars, together with gas and dust, held together by gravitational attraction.
In the case of our galaxy, the Milky Way, scientists say it may include more than 200 billion stars, some a thousand times bigger than our Sun!

Grouse against the grain: Don’t hunt like the rest of ’em

If you could see the routes most ruffed grouse hunters take in any given chunk of national forest, you’d probably notice that about 80% of them are centered on access trails and logging roads. This goes for the folks who just want a clear-ish shot at a bird without having to bust brush, and the folks who spend most of their grouse season puttering around on ATVs.
While plenty of birds are killed along trails and logging roads, the hunter looking for a grouse limit is often going to have to get his dogs off the easy stuff. This is hard for many folks to stomach in the early season, because they know the flush-to-shot ratio is going to be pretty dismal. That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it.

Illinois’ archery deer hunters: A look into who they are

Now that we’re getting close to the start of a new bow season in Illinois, it seems like a good time for me to let archery hunters in the state know exactly who you are.
Or something like that. The Illinois Natural History Survey released results of its “Illinois Deer Hunter Report” in January 2022. The information in the report was based on questions asked to deer hunters after the a deer season a couple of years before that. But if we know nothing else about deer hunters here, it’s that they don’t change their minds – or opinions often or easily. So let’s take a look at archery deer hunting in Illinois.
