Trout on the New York, Vermont border: Walloomsac River has become a gem

For anglers who like to fish for trout and are in the vicinity of the Walloomsac River, it is a 16.5-mile stream that flows through both New York and Vermont, and is a tributary of the Hoosic (or Hoosac) River, which in its own right, is a fantastic trout fishery.
During the past decade, or more, it has become quite a popular destination for trout fishing, as it’s a haven to a variety of trout species.

The panfish of late summer and how to catch ’em

In the world of a crappie or bluegill, late summer can represent the best of times. Food availability is at its peak, and while the metabolism of panfish predators is also at a seasonal high, there’s ample vegetation in which the smaller fish may hide and find grub at the same time. Happy days.
Such conditions can make for challenging angling, with fish being in this “everywhere but nowhere” type of scenario that plagues late-summer panfish anglers. What to do?

PA’s Deer Management Assistance Program permits selling out on game lands

The Pennsylvania Game Commission implemented the Deer Management Assistance Program on select state game lands for the first time this year, and it didn’t take hunters long to jump at the opportunity.
Permits for DMAP went on sale with the third round of antlerless deer licenses on Aug. 14, and by Aug. 17 more than half of the DMAP permits allotted for game lands were sold. The agency issued 4,679 DMAP permits for units within 24 game lands, and in the first four days more than 2,400 were sold.

Lessons learned from a master of squirrel hunting

My friend Earl Jeter, of Champaign, Ill., was a master of squirrel hunting. But heart disease took Earl at the relatively young age of 56. We all have lost a friend, relative, or mentor like Earl.
But when the nights turn crisp and leaves blush color, memories of bygone experiences shared with Earl in the squirrel woods come flooding back to me.

Three cures to help you catch muskies after summer cold fronts

Easing the boat into the narrow bay, I could sense our fishing success was about to change.
Through five hours of fishing under cloudless skies we had raised only a single, lazy muskie, but now the conditions finally felt right. We had chosen the bay because it faced eastward and was, thus, protected from the stiff northwest breeze that followed the passing of a cold front. All day the thick weeds that lined the back of the bay had been warmed by the sun, and cabbage tops protruded above the surface.
