High quality trout stream, timber make Iowa’s Big Mill Creek Wildlife Area a popular destination

The parking lot at the northwest corner of Iowa’s Big Mill Creek Wildlife Area provides a good spot to people watch, or more precisely, vehicle watch. Cars and trucks and SUVs coming and going, up and down the access lane to Mill Creek, where drivers try their luck with the local trout population.
“The big draw for the area is the trout stream – it brings the most people here,” said Nick McClimon, wildlife technician for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Maquoketa Wildlife Unit at nearby Green Island.

North Dakota’s early goose season provides August hunting opportunities

High school fall sports practices are underway, school has either started or will begin soon. Like it or not, it’s hunting season. The good news is the fishing season in North Dakota never closes so hunters who lament the loss of the true summer can choose not to take part in the early Canada goose hunt.
For farmers and landowners, hunting of Canada geese in August and early September is intended to reduce local Canada goose numbers, which remain high. For hunters it’s an additional hunting opportunity to increase pressure and reduce the locally breeding Canada geese.

Streams of Thought: Nicollet Conservation Club a worthy recipient of Outdoor Leaders Award, and what is South Dakota doing?

It’s my great honor to announce that the Nicollet Conservation Club has been named winner of Outdoor News’ 2023 Outdoor Leaders Award. The NCC joins a growing and distinguished list of organizations bestowed the award in past years, beginning with the Christina-Ina-Anka Lake Association in 2012, the first year of the award.
Minnesotans who consider themselves serious waterfowlers are well aware of the waterfowling resource in southern Minnesota known as Swan Lake. Well, if you think NCC, think Swan Lake.

Commentary: Archery, hunter ed threatened by Biden administration action

Hunter education, archery in schools, wilderness courses, and other outdoor-focused school activities provide unmatched enrichment opportunities for students from all walks of life. These programs provide critical life skills for students and, according to teachers engaged with these programs, student participation has been correlated with improvements in academic performance, behavior, and school attendance.
Unfortunately, some of these programs are at risk of losing important federal funding.

Minnesota’s Nicollet Conservation Club earns Outdoor News’ 2023 Outdoor Leaders Award

When Vietnam War veteran Fred Froehlich was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in November 1970 after serving a year aboard an attack carrier in the Gulf of Tonkin, the hunter and conservationist remembers his father eventually asking him, upon his return home, if wanted to join the Nicollet Conservation Club.
Never one to mince words, the younger Froehlich fired, and for effect. “No,” he said. “You guys don’t do anything for wildlife.”
