Fishing with the presidents in Pennsylvania

One boat. Four presidents. Dozens of fish. Sound like an interesting combination? It most certainly was, as a foursome of former leaders converged on the Juniata River in Pennsylvania last month for the presidential treatment of angling enjoyment.
This collective quartet, vaguely reminiscent of Mount Rushmore busts, did not feature the likes of national dignitaries; no Roosevelts or Washington – not even a Bush or Clinton — but was comprised of past presidents from the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association.

Southeast Minnesota hosts 50th anniversary of NWTF state chapter

Wild turkey hunting enthusiasts and other conservationists gathered at North Park in Caledonia on Saturday, July 22, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Minnesota Chapter.
City Mayor “Tank” Schroeder welcomed attendees for an exciting day and evening of commemorating the wild turkey success story. Five decades ago, the NWTF, in cooperation with the Minnesota DNR, launched the process to help restore a now-iconic species to the fields and forests of the southeast.

Beaver: Here’s how they go from a pelt to a Stetson

If you are a trapper and looking to put up numbers of desirable pelts, beaver appears to be the way to go in pretty much every section of the U.S.
Averages on the more commercial pelts have almost tripled from last year and some in the market expect prices next season to be even higher. Hats are driving this market so I thought readers might have some interest in how the process works – from trap to Stetson.

Fish interactions in Upper Mississippi River basin gets closer look to aid management

Extending from southern Illinois all the way up to Minnesota, the Upper Mississippi River basin’s system comprises an extremely complex network of streams and watersheds.
Little is known about how those systems and the native fishes in them interact. Shay Valentine, a Southern Illinois University Carbondale doctoral student, is combining various lab techniques to examine habitats and diets of 12 fish species to learn more about how they use resources in the river.
