Early-nesting ducks fooled by climate, land-use change in Prairie Pothole Region

Each year approximately 10 million waterfowl fly north to their breeding grounds in the Prairie Pothole Region of North America, but the landscape that greets them has changed.
Weather patterns and agricultural practices have significantly transformed the pothole-dotted native grasslands that waterfowl have used for thousands of years.
These changes have resulted in some waterfowl proliferating while others decline.

Plenty to see during rainy Pennsylvania gobbler hunt

There was a time when I used to let spring gobbler hunting bother me. It’s my favorite season to hate, especially when things go wrong. Uncooperative birds, missed shots, and terrible weekend weather — all these elements have prevented me from filling my tag over the past several years.
I almost said screw it and didn’t go this year, but on the eve before the opener I found myself digging out my gear, conditioning my calls, and preparing my vest for additional punishment.

Nuisance raccoons can be trapped on private land in Iowa year-round beginning June 7

Private landowners in Iowa will soon be able to trap nuisance raccoons on their land on a year-round basis, following the signing of House File 317 on April 28 by Gov. Kim Reynolds.
The bill was approved by an 87-11 vote on March 7 of the House, unanimously by the state’s Natural Resources Commission on April 13 and by a 47-2 vote of the Senate on April 17. The law will take effect June 7. In addition to the private-land rule, the commission extended the regular season one month for hunting and trapping fur-bearing animals.

Turkey researchers asking New York hunters to donate part of their turkey legs this year

Researchers are asking that hunters who harvest a wild turkey in New York this spring submit one of their turkey legs to be analyzed as part of a study. Successful hunters should keep the tarsus of the leg, which is from the knee/elbow joint down to the foot. It is OK for hunters to remove and keep the spur.

For early-season fishing plans, consider ice-out timing

It’s extremely rare for there to be ice on any of the state’s lakes during a May opener, even in the extreme northern portions of Minnesota. Yet, there are still additional considerations when ice-out is just days before we float the lakes it once covered.
We’ve all adjusted to what fishing cold water can mean: Shiners will be sold (where available), and jigs will be pitched. But other plans can work wonders.

Fourth-graders raising trout for Ohio’s Wolf Run Lake

Fourth grade students at Shenandoah Elementary School in Noble County are learning important lessons in environmental science thanks to a “Trout In the Classroom” program.
Sponsored by the Ohio Council of Trout Unlimited and the Ohio DNR, the program teaches students to care for animals in their natural habitat in a way that is both fun and educational.

Wisconsin Natural Resources Board, DNR ‘playing nice’ under new leadership

The Natural Resources Board (NRB) held its April 12 meeting in Madison, and there was a noticeable change in the relationship between the NRB and DNR.
Where in some previous months there was noticeable friction between former DNR Secretary Preston Cole and NRB members Dr. Frederick Prehn and Greg Kazmierski, now there seems to exist an air of camaraderie and effort to underscore a desire to work together.
