Fishing options of New York’s Great Lakes Basin continue to amaze

To give you an idea how some sportsmen maximize their time, they will be on the water at 12:01 a.m. walleye fishing on Lake Erie May 1. By 4 a.m., they are in the woods setting up for the spring turkey opener and if they are successful early, they are on the way to catching spring salmon in Lake Ontario on the Niagara Bar. Sleep is an afterthought.
There are so many variations of fishing opportunities in our treasured Great Lakes here in New York, it still continues to amaze me.

Pennsylvania Game Commission to spray 110,000 acres of state lands to protect against spongy moths

In an effort to protect wildlife habitat, the Pennsylvania Game Commission plans to spray nearly 110,000 acres of state game lands this spring.
Spraying will occur on 43 different state game lands – 109,180 acres in all – and will begin as soon as leaf-out occurs and spongy moth egg masses hatch, likely in late April and May. The forests to be treated in the coming weeks have building populations of spongy moths that, if left untreated, could cause severe defoliation this summer.

Is lack of antlerless deer take reason for concern in parts of Minnesota?

Hunting is the primary tool that state wildlife agencies use to manage deer herds, but making a dent in whitetail populations by way of antlerless harvest is proving to be a difficult proposition in some parts of the country. That includes some areas of Minnesota.

Ohio’s South Zone hunters to get season’s first shot for turkeys

A popular spring tradition since 1966, Ohio’s wild turkey hunting seasons began in mid-April, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. This spring, hunters will benefit from two years of above average turkey hatches.
Each summer, the Division of Wildlife collects information on young wild turkeys, called poults. Brood surveys in 2021 and 2022 show above average results that will benefit Ohio’s wild turkey population numbers this spring.

Wisconsin Natural Resources Board sets Sept. 16 Canada goose opener on Mississippi

The Natural Resources Board (NRB) adopted rules for the 2023 waterfowl season almost identical to 2022, except that a divide among hunting groups brought up questions about how early Canada goose hunting should open on the Mississippi River.
The DNR offered its proposed framework, with just one substantial change from last year – opening the Mississippi River Canada goose zone on Sept. 16, rather than opening later with the South Zone duck season.

Spinner fishing western New York trout streams

There are many trout fishing methods – bait, flies, small minnow crankbaits, and hair or plastic jigs. Spinning certainly isn’t the end-all, but if you know how to fish them, they’re an extremely productive means of catching trout. Further, since they cover a lot of water more quickly than other lures or baits, your catch-rate can go up significantly.
