Minnesota DNR encourages public to report fish die-offs

To report fish die-offs, people should call the Minnesota duty officer at 651‐649‐5451 or 800‐422‐0798 (the officer line is available 24 hours per day, seven days a week). An early report allows timely water and fish sampling or other response actions, if needed. It’s especially helpful to know what sizes and types of fish people see in a fish die-off.

Mail survey shows Michigan’s 2022 deer harvest, hunter numbers drop

According to preliminary results from the DNR’s mail survey of random deer hunters, harvest numbers and hunter numbers were down during the 2022 season.
“These are results from the returned surveys and are still very preliminary,” Brian Frawley, the DNR’s statistician told members of the state Natural Resources Commission at its April 13 meeting at Lansing Community College west campus. “We do have an adjustment factor for the lower response rates, because we tend to overestimate success because often people who return the surveys were the successful ones.”

Michigan bills would set regulations for hunting, fishing guides

Michigan lawmakers are again considering legislation to regulate commercial hunting and fishing guides after previous proposals languished.
The bipartisan bill package includes three bills that are virtually identical to legislation in previous sessions aimed at regulating commercial hunting and fishing guides to weed out bad actors and collect data for the Department of Natural Resources.

The Minnesota Department of Natural resources announced that Fort Snelling State Park will close to the public starting at 8 a.m. on Friday, April 21 due to rising waters on the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers.
The park, located in St. Paul, will remain closed until flood waters recede and DNR staff are able to assess conditions within the park and address any safety issues resulting from the flood.

Pennsylvania bill would deny hunting licenses to those convicted of animal cruelty

A bill that would grant authority to the Pennsylvania Game Commission to deny or revoke a hunting or furtaking license from anyone convicted of animal cruelty has resurfaced in the state House.
State Rep. Melissa Shusterman, D-Chester County, introduced House Bill 669, which has been referred to the Game and Fisheries Committee. In her co-sponsorship memo to legislators, Shusterman referred to the 2019 incident in Jefferson County where two Brookville-area teenagers filmed themselves torturing a wounded buck during the statewide firearms deer season.
