An Upper Peninsula lawmaker wants to curtail the ability of DNR employees to tread onto private property without a warrant, reviving legislation introduced in prior sessions.

No new counties with CWD in wild deer herd found in Michigan’s 2022 sampling

Testing for chronic wasting disease in deer last year did not reveal any new outbreaks in southern Michigan or the Upper Peninsula.
Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials presented an update on the state’s chronic wasting disease surveillance to the Natural Resources Commission at an April meeting in Lansing.
Michigan counties with cases of free-ranging CWD-positive deer include Hillsdale, Jackson, Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Ionia, Kent, Montcalm, Gratiot, Isabella, and one positive from Dickinson in the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan bills would set regulations for hunting, fishing guides

Michigan lawmakers are again considering legislation to regulate commercial hunting and fishing guides after previous proposals languished.
The bipartisan bill package includes three bills that are virtually identical to legislation in previous sessions aimed at regulating commercial hunting and fishing guides to weed out bad actors and collect data for the Department of Natural Resources.

Michigan groups rally to preserve Cornwall Creek Flooding dam

Efforts are underway to save the Cornwall Creek Flooding dam in the heart of Pigeon River Country, but the uphill effort is not expected to prevent a drawdown scheduled for this summer.
Local residents and others are organizing in hopes of keeping the impoundment, which they contend is central to the state forest’s character and recreational opportunities, noting the lake’s draw for anglers, horseback riders, kayakers, and birdwatchers.

Legislation introduced to re-establish a wolf population in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula

An Upper Peninsula lawmaker believes the Department of Natural Resources has a “responsibility” to re-establish gray wolves in the Lower Peninsula.
Republican Rep. Greg Markkanen (R-Hancock), introduced a resolution last month calling for the DNR to use a portion of the Upper Peninsula’s abundant wolf population to re-establish a self-sustaining population below the bridge, along with House Bill 4102 to make it happen. The Hancock lawmaker insists bill is a ‘serious proposal.’

Michigan bill would repeal mandatory deer registration, potential criminal penalties

Legislation introduced in the state House would repeal reporting requirements for deer harvests and potential criminal penalties implemented by the Department of Natural Resources last season.
Charlevoix Republican Rep. Neil Riske introduced House Bill 4135 last month to repeal a controversial order implemented by the DNR last season that requires hunters to electronically pin-drop the locations of their harvest on a website within 72 hours. The requirement comes with potential jail time and fines for those who do not comply, which Riske told Michigan Outdoor News he believes is “ridiculous.”
