Early reports from the last few days of the rifle deer season in Pennsylvania indicate venison donations to Hunters Sharing the Harvest are ahead of last year’s record pace.
According to Executive Director Randy Ferguson, as of Dec. 8 – the second to last day of the rifle season – donations were up about 34% from the same time last year.
For the first time since 2007 Pennsylvania’s bear harvest is on track to be below 3,000.
But according to a Pennsylvania Game Commission biologist, that doesn’t necessarily mean the state’s bear population has dropped. As of Dec. 10, the unofficial 2023 bear harvest stood at 2,898 for the early, statewide and extended seasons combined. Last year, hunters harvested 3,170 bears overall, down from 3,621 in 2021 and far below the record of 4,653 which occurred in 2019.

Despite increased catches of Atlantic striped bass in 2022, fishing mortality threatens to derail efforts to increase the species’ spawning stock by 2029.
After Atlantic striped bass were declared overfished by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission in 2019, several measures were enacted to limit mortality on the commercial and recreational fishing segments. With a few exceptions, the Pennsylvania Game Commission prohibits the use of electronic devices for hunting. When it comes to drones, however, Mike Yoder believes there’s a difference between hunting and tracking fatally wounded deer.
Yoder founded Drone Deer Recovery in the fall of 2022. Based in Ohio, Yoder and other trained pilots use thermal drones to locate downed deer, essentially doing the searching for the hunter, or picking up where the track was lost.

Tony Hudak has traveled across North America hunting wild turkeys, and it’s rare that a gobbler sends him home with an unfilled tag.
The resident of Luzerne County, Pa., is one of a handful of hunters to achieve the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Super Slam – harvesting a gobbler in all 49 states where wild turkeys exist (Alaska the lone exception).
Now, Hudak is traveling the country again, working on his second Super Slam. The quest was nearly derailed, however, not by an elusive bird but a tiny bug.
Four years have passed since Pennsylvania recorded a record bear harvest of 4,653 in 2019, and early reports from this year make it unlikely the 2023 harvest will challenge the milestone.
Although the four-day statewide season opened on Nov. 18, the early season harvest was lagging behind previous years. According to preliminary numbers (as of Nov. 12), hunters harvested 1,201 bears in the early archery, muzzleloader and special firearms seasons combined.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission says it doesn’t require game wardens to use their home address on citations, special permits and other correspondence, but a state legislator said he and his colleagues have heard otherwise.
State Reps. Dave Maloney, R-Berks, and Joe Hamm, R-Lycoming and Sullivan, have introduced a bill which directs conservation officers to use a post office box or the address of their region office for the purpose of issuing citations, special permits and other agency business. The reason for the legislation, they said, is to protect officers and their families from possible retribution from offenders and others.
