Light turnout at Dane, Vernon county spring hearings in Wisconsin

What a difference a year makes, as the Dane County Conservation Congress and Wisconsin DNR spring conservation hearing held April 14 drew only 23 attendees.
In 2024 the event, also held at the McFarland High School, was held in a large auditorium and attracted just short of 100 people with an interest in three questions involving controversial wake boats, that opponents charge can spread invasive aquatic species and create high waves that present safety and shoreline concerns.

Wisconsin Governor’s Fishing Opener at Rice Lake light on walleyes

The 59th annual Wisconsin Governor’s Fishing Opener took place on Barron County’s 939-acre Rice Lake, where most opening day action featured northern pike.
As usual the event, consisting of anglers eager to get out on the water on the opening day of the 2025 inland fishing season, along with Gov. Tony Evers, DNR and Department of Tourism officials and the news media, had the opportunity to fish a different lake and with different fishing partners.

Avian influenza naturally occurs in certain wildlife

Wisconsin is seeing a wide variety of mortality of wildlife species due to the H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), but the risk of the virus to the general public is relatively low.
Jasmine Batten, wildlife health specialist for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), told the Natural Resources Board (NRB) that the avian influenza routinely and naturally occurs among waterfowl and other wild aquatic birds worldwide.

Wisconsin’s Pete Olson, a coach and avid muskie angler, dies on 90th birthday

“When I die, I know I’m not going to heaven because I’m there now,” Pete Olson said. “I fish every day and coach basketball during the winter.”

Olson was the varsity basketball coach at LaFollette High School in Madison for 30 years where his teams won four conference championships, and state WIAA basketball championships in 1977 and 1982.

Commentary: No season needed on sandhill cranes in Wisconsin

The proposal for a hunting season on sandhill cranes, like all hunting seasons, should be made based on biological information and sociological concerns.
To paint people who oppose a hunting season as anti-hunters or as those without an interest in hunting, is dead wrong. I hunt, am from a family with a history of hunting, and I oppose opening a season on sandhill cranes in Wisconsin.

Tagging a ‘ghost gobbler’ a memorable way to wrap up 40 years hunting Wisconsin turkeys

Rain was a continual pest during last year’s turkey season during the second week in May in Wisconsin. Enduring a wet afternoon and evening left a person wondering where to set up the next morning.
I went with a spot where I could snuggle in among the protection of pine trees. The next morning the fog was thick as I left the cabin at 4:45 a.m.
