Wisconsin NRB OKs fish rule changes, including April trout opener

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB), at its June 25 meeting, approved changes in several fishing regulations, including opening the inland trout fishing season in April, one month earlier than the May fishing opener.
The regulations had been presented to the public at the 2025 spring fish and game public hearings in each county, plus at an additional hearing on May 22.

Rule involving technology used for trapping needs review, says Wisconsin Natural Resources Board

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) held off on adopting a rule proposed by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that would set standards for using technology to tend traps, along with several hunting rule changes.
At the board’s June 25 meeting, the DNR proposed a package of rules that would modify hunting and trapping regulations, based on results from spring fish and wildlife public hearings.

7% bump in Wisconsin’s breeding duck numbers from ’24 may not tell the full story

Taylor Finger, game bird ecologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), told attendees of a June 30 DNR Migratory Game Bird Advisory Committee meeting that the total breeding duck estimate in Wisconsin this spring was 7% higher than last year and is 27% above the long-term average.
“The reason why this is up over last year is that in the last three-plus years we are getting quite a few more ‘other’ ducks counted in our spring survey because we’ve had to run the survey earlier due to a lack of winter,” Finger said.

Grant County escapes Wisconsin’s holiday deer hunt as NRB approves framework of 2025 season

In a show of support for recommendations by County Deer Advisory Councils (CDAC), the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) approved the 2025 deer season framework June 25 that includes a holiday hunt and extended January season in 44 Farmland Zone units.
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) had agreed with all CDAC recommendations except for not including the holiday hunt and extended archery hunt in Grant County.

Wisconsin’s David Gunnulson helps save part of Koshkonong prairie in Dane County

Thanks to the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance (SWBA), a declining population of Wisconsin’s grassland birds is receiving permanent protection of their nesting grounds.
SWBA held a ribbon cutting event at its new Hillside Prairie Sanctuary, June 7, in Dane County’s town of Christina to celebrate land that will continue to be home to grassland birds and other wildlife. The 348-acre farmland, once part of the 18,000-acre Koshkonong prairie, was an active row-cropped farm for five generations until David Gunnulson changed to more ecological hay farming.

Wisconsin turkey plan to get a 10-year ‘facelift’

The return of wild turkeys to Wisconsin is one of the DNR’s most successful restoration programs and the plan for managing those thriving birds is about to be updated.
The DNR informed the Natural Resources Board (NRB) that it will now begin updating the agency’s turkey management plan that most recently covered the years of 2015 to 2025. Taylor Finger, game bird specialist for the DNR Bureau of Wildlife Management, told the NRB May 28 that the new plan will cover the next 10 years and include input from the public and many organizations.

Wisconsin DNR chastised for not taking action on wake boats

Three citizens told the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that the agency simply isn’t doing enough to clamp down on the problem generated by wake boats.
Their testimony to the Natural Resources Board on May 2 highlighted their belief the DNR is taking no action on this issue even though the potential for wake boats to cause damage to lake ecosystems is very apparent – and has been demonstrated more than once. In response, the board said it would ask the DNR for an informational briefing at its June meeting.

Wisconsin’s new DNR secretary hits the ground running

It’s all about public service and doing something to benefit the state’s natural resources.
That’s why Karen Hyun, Ph.D., the new DNR secretary, told Wisconsin Outdoor News she took the job leading an agency that is often in the middle of political battles. “I really like public service, and there’s a lot of good that you can do, particularly in the conservation and environmental world,” Hyun said.
