The DNR told Wisconsin Natural Resources Board members that the agency plans to forward four statewide fishery questions that were on the DNR spring hearings questionnaire, but one board member suggested putting the brakes on the earlier muskie season opener in northern Wisconsin.
The public supported the earlier opener when presented with the question on the spring hearing questionnaire, but some members of the Conservation Congress and Natural Resources Board worry an earlier opener would put too much stress on spawning muskies.

Wisconsin DNR estimates state’s elk numbers will pass 500 by July
Wisconsin’s northern elk herd is expected to reach about 355 animals following the spring calving season, with the newer southern herd hitting about 160 elk once calves hit the ground in June.
The DNR told the Natural Resources Board at a May 24 meeting that the Clam Lake herd in Ashland and Sawyer counties now numbers an estimated 271 elk, and about 130 in Jackson County in the Black River State Forest.

Sitting in a room with dangerous wildlife smugglers who are about to be arrested, and eventually put in prison, is not for the faint of heart. For Tim Santel, it was business as usual.
Santel, 58, a 1987 graduate in wildlife ecology from UW-Stevens Point, was in charge of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Special Investigations Unit, a nation-wide task force focused on the biggest and most complex criminal wildlife investigations.

The Natural Resources Board (NRB) held its April 12 meeting in Madison, and there was a noticeable change in the relationship between the NRB and DNR.
Where in some previous months there was noticeable friction between former DNR Secretary Preston Cole and NRB members Dr. Frederick Prehn and Greg Kazmierski, now there seems to exist an air of camaraderie and effort to underscore a desire to work together.

Wisconsin Natural Resources Board sets Sept. 16 Canada goose opener on Mississippi
The Natural Resources Board (NRB) adopted rules for the 2023 waterfowl season almost identical to 2022, except that a divide among hunting groups brought up questions about how early Canada goose hunting should open on the Mississippi River.
The DNR offered its proposed framework, with just one substantial change from last year – opening the Mississippi River Canada goose zone on Sept. 16, rather than opening later with the South Zone duck season.
