McCaffery, 84, of Rhinelander, was a longtime Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife researcher. He retired twice from the agency. Once officially; once unofficially.
He officially retired in 2000, but he never left his desk, as he stayed on as a volunteer for another 20 years, willing to share the expertise he gained over 37 years as a biologist specializing in deer.
