Lake Superior lake trout, ciscoes, whitefish in good shape, Wisconsin DNR says

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) approved an emergency order at its Oct. 23 meeting updating cisco and lake trout quotas on Lake Superior.
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) updates the annual assessments of Lake Superior fish stocks and fishing quotas every two to three years and the current emergency rule ended in October. This emergency rule will fill the gap until a permanent rule is brought to the board in December to take effect this coming spring.

Wisconsin DNR seeks 2% ‘housekeeping’ hike in budget

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) received a glimpse of the new 2% increase for a “housekeeping” type of budget the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is requesting for 2025 through 2027.
The DNR submitted its budget request to the governor via the Department of Administration Sept. 16, and gave an overview to the board at its Sept. 25 meeting. Maggie Hutter, DNR budget director, said the budget does not include any new initiatives.

‘Outsider’ population ecologist offers thoughts on Wisconsin resource management

What would an outside professional think of Wisconsin’s wildlife situation?
Dr. Bill Clark is a population ecologist, with a broad background in many wildlife and plant species, who also nurtures a special interest in bobcats across the continent. Clark has the advantage of seeing Wisconsin’s wildlife programs from an outsider’s perspective. He tends to think in big picture, watching large-scale landscapes over the long-term.

Bill Smith, Wisconsin NRB chair, shares vision with outdoor media

Bill Smith, chair of Wisconsin’s Natural Resources Board (NRB), has weathered a period of turmoil and change on the board, which sets policy for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
“Ever since 1967 there have only been a couple of instances where nominees for the positions to serve on the board were not confirmed, but in 2022 that changed in a short period,” Smith told the annual gathering of the Wisconsin Outdoor Communicators Association Aug. 2 in Eagle River, where Smith appeared as a guest speaker.

Wisconsin’s regulation of wake boats up to local government for now

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) received a long-awaited summary of rules involving wake boats at its Aug. 14 meeting, but for now the best way to regulate wake boat use seems to be through the passage of local ordinances by town or county boards.
Michelle Nault, DNR lakes and rivers section manager, and Darren Kuhn, DNR boating law administrator, reviewed what laws the DNR can enforce, revealing a gap for what restraints are needed.
