Streams of Thought: Minnesota pheasant opener brings some soreness, but I love every minute of it

There are certain times, when your head hits the pillow at night, that you’re absolutely certain you’ve earned and are badly in need of a long, hard sleep. Such was the case for me on Sunday, ’round about 10 p.m. (I’d hoped it would be earlier.)
Liza the black Lab had ridden on a pickup seat for four hours – from afternoon sunshine to nighttime darkness – with barely a budge.

Grasslands bill revitalized, introduced in U.S. House

A program aimed at protecting and restoring U.S. grasslands that has languished in Congress for several years was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on Oct. 9 by a collective of both Republicans and Democrats.
The North American Grasslands Conservation Act is modeled after the well-known North American Wetlands Conservation Act, which, according to Ducks Unlimited, has provided grants totaling more than $2.1 billion that leveraged over $4.3 billion for NAWCA projects through matching funds.

Minnesota man charged with killing a protected gray wolf

A 30-year-old Hinckley man has been charged with killing a federally-protected gray wolf in 2021, a gross misdemeanor, according to a late-September court filing in Pine County District Court.
In addition, Brady Tyler Harth also faces gross misdemeanor charges of transporting illegal big-game animals (a whitetail buck and a bear) in 2021 and 2022. Gross misdemeanors are punishable by up to a year in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both. Further, Harth was charged with illegally possessing the deer and bear, which DNR officials say were taken illegally.

Minnesota elk hunters take eight for 10 during hunt

While about 4,000 prospective elk hunters applied to hunt the species in northwestern Minnesota this year, Kelsie LaSharr, the DNR’s elk coordinator, says she’s still surprised by how many in Minnesota aren’t aware of the limited once-in-a-lifetime elk licenses available.
Further, when she sees the animals harvested, LaSharr says she’s more than impressed by the quality of the animals in that part of the state. This year, eight of 10 elk permits were filled, all of them by bull elk.

Streams of Thought: Vacancies continue to hinder Minnesota DNR’s fisheries field offices

There’s really not down time, so to speak, when it comes to the operations at Minnesota’s 29 area fisheries offices. That said, things get pretty serious about this time of year, when the task of removing fingerling-size walleyes from lakes and ponds for stocking in waters across the state gets underway.
It’s this stocking (and that of other fish species) upon which a healthy portion of the state’s half-million anglers rely.

USFWS asks court to toss wolf-relisting ruling

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Friday, Sept. 13 asked the U.S. Court of Appeals to vacate a district court ruling that more than two years ago returned gray wolves outside the northern Rocky Mountains region to the endangered species list.
The relisting in February of 2022 resulted from a lawsuit filed by wolf protectionist groups and followed federal delisting of the species in 2020. Thereafter, several parties appealed the district court’s order to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The U.S. government joined the appeal in April of 2022.

Minnesota citizen advisory group gives final report to DNR, state legislators

In what will be its final report to the Minnesota DNR and state legislators, the members of the DNR’s citizen advisory group, the Game and Fish Budgetary Oversight Committee, recommended the agency continue to advocate for state wolf management, create a swan-hunting season, continue to seek long-term alternatives to keep healthy the Game and Fish Fund, and more.
Per 2024 legislation, the BOC, in its current form since 2011, will cease to exist, replaced by a DNR commissioner-appointed committee of at least 15 members – some of whom may come from the existing committees. The DNR currently is seeking applicants for the new committee.

Streams of Thought: A brief reprieve from politics as Minnesota welcomes a new hunting season

Let’s take a break, shall we, from politics, the relentless barrage of coverage and conversation of which has left folks, including me, overwhelmed and often agitated. How about a brief reprieve?
Hunting seasons, finally and mercifully, have arrived. Early waterfowl and bear hunting begin Sunday. Grouse, deer, and regular waterfowl seasons (and others slightly less attended) follow in mid-September. My October pheasant-hunting plans are in progress. Let us rejoice!
