Swans run down in Minnesota’s Wright County, DNR asking for information from the public

The Minnesota DNR’s Law Enforcement Division is seeking information regarding who may have purposely used a vehicle to run down and kill five trumpeter swans – two adults and three juveniles – along Clementa Ave. NW, just south of County Road 39, in Wright County.

Judge rules against deer farmers in ’23 lawsuit from Minnesota

As Minnesota’s remaining deer farmers stare at an impending Sept. 1 deadline to adhere to new fencing requirements, a federal judge last week dealt the farmers another blow in dismissing a lawsuit aimed at 2023 and 2024 legislative actions regarding those farms, and in also denying a temporary injunction request targeting the new fencing rules.
John Tunheim, a U.S. district court judge, issued the ruling Aug. 14. An attorney for the Minnesota Deer Farmers Association immediately stated the group would appeal the ruling.

Streams of Thought: A well-deserved honor for Minnesota’s Sand Dunes Gobblers Chapter of NWTF

In the latest edition of Minnesota Outdoor News, you’ll find an excellent story written by an excellent writer about an excellent conservation group.
Again this year, it was my honor and privilege to make the call, this year to Nancy McLaughlin, of the Sand Dunes Gobblers Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, to inform Nancy and members/volunteers that they’d been selected for our annual Outdoor Leaders Award. I hereby offer the chapter my sincere congratulations. Well deserved!

Ducks struck and killed near Fosston in northern Minnesota; CO seeks suspect, info

A northern Minnesota DNR conservation officer is asking for information that might help him determine who struck and killed nine mallards left strewn along a roadway south of Fosston.
CO Brady Manteufel, of Bagley, said a local resident called Aug. 4 to report the incident: Two adult mallards and seven that likely hatched earlier this year were dead and scattered along a stretch of County Road 6 near 430th St. SE, about two miles south of Fosston in Polk County, Manteufel said.

Streams of Thought: New Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee forming in Minnesota to track DNR spending

I don’t know about you, but as the buyer of a host of hunting and fishing licenses and stamps each year, I tend to sleep easier knowing that the money I spend, which in turn is spent by the Minnesota DNR, is being properly routed.
In other words, spent for its intended purposes. Thus it’s good to know, too, that for the past 30 years, there’s been a group of citizens to oversee that spending – those dollars that flow from the DNR’s Game and Fish Fund – as best they can. That group of citizens – for at least a few more months – comprise the Fisheries Oversight and the Wildlife Oversight committees.

Minnesota DNR plans for a walleye limit of two on Mille Lacs beginning Aug. 16

With angling pressure about one-third of Minnesota DNR projections and a walleye take that’s just over 26% of the total allowable state angler kill, DNR officials told members of the Mille Lacs Lake Fisheries Advisory Committee on Monday that they’re proposing – beginning Aug. 16 – a two-fish walleye limit with a harvest slot of 18 to 20 inches (with one over 28 inches allowed in possession).
The department originally had planned to allow for a one-fish limit and a harvest slot of 21 to 23 inches.
“There are still signatures that need to go on documents,” said Brad Parsons, DNR Fisheries Section manager, who said that was likely to occur this week.

A Q&A with Kelly Straka, the Minnesota DNR’s new fish and wildlife director

Kelly Straka (pronounced STRAW-ka), 45, most recently the DNR’s Wildlife Section manager, began a new role July 4 – that of director of the Division of Fish and Wildlife.
Outdoor News recently compiled a list of questions for the new director as a means to get to know her, and also to obtain updates on pertinent issues within the division. Below, you’ll find Straka’s responses, edited for space considerations.
