Minnesota study shows importance of using wakeboats in water deeper than 20 feet

Recently the University of Minnesota’s St. Anthony Falls Laboratory research scientists wrapped up phase two of a study to understand the effects that wakeboats have on lake ecosystems.
What they found is that wakeboats traveling at semi-displacement speeds, or in surfing mode, disrupt the lakebed when the water depth is less than 20 feet deep.

Mark Johnson, long-time Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council director in Minnesota, to retire in January

Come September, Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council Executive Director Mark Johnson will celebrate 11 years in the role. It also will be his last such anniversary, as he eyes retirement in early January.
“Every day has been enjoyable. … I think it’s because I just really feel honored at being in this position and seeing the things I do and working with the people I do,” Johnson said.

Minnesota’s LCCMR OKs 109 natural resources projects for $103 million in 2026

With around 400 applicants seeking funding from the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Natural Resources this year, only 109 are making the cut for a package of projects that will go before the Legislature in 2026.
“It was really heavy lifting for all the members, especially the legislators” and LCCMR staff to sift through almost double the number of proposals the commission receives, according to LCCMR co-chair Rita Albrecht.

Military veterans find the muskies on Minnesota’s Lake Vermilion at ‘Madness’ event

After following its Facebook page for a few years, Jake Ulm, of Milaca, Minn., decided to apply to go on a muskie-fishing trip on Lake Vermilion with the nonprofit group, Hometown Hero Outdoors.
“I’ve been a fisherman my whole life. I love the outdoors. But I caught a 47-inch muskie, so that was pretty fun,” Ulm said.

How will Minnesota’s recently-set 2025 deer regulations impact this season?

Coming off two mild winters, the Minnesota DNR will this year increase lottery limits in some deer permits areas or harvest limits in 25 of the 130 DPAs in the state.
“The northern part of the state is still struggling, but for the most part, we’re optimistic, so that’s why we raised bag limits in a number of DPAs or kept the majority the same,” said the DNR’s acting big-game coordinator, Paul Burr.

Minnesota CO Academy cadets exposed to ‘sportfishing scenarios’ as instruction nears its completion

For the past several weeks, through classroom and simulated field scenarios, 13 DNR Enforcement conservation officer cadets have been working to prepare for the job as Minnesota conservation officer.
Each week, the cadets focus on an aspect of outdoor recreation and home in on it. On Thursday, July 24, the cadets got a taste of how to handle sportfishing, both on the open water and on ice through simulated scenarios.

Walleye limit on Minnesota’s Mille Lacs to increase, slot unchanged

Likely around mid-August, the Minnesota DNR will increase the limit of walleyes an angler may take from two fish to three thanks to state anglers harvesting only about 22% of its allowed take.
Despite that change, the Mille Lacs Fisheries Advisory Committee members and DNR officials don’t expect the state’s kill to increase significantly with the slot remaining the same – now allowing three walleyes 17 inches or larger but only one over 20 inches.

DNR offers $4.65 million to southwest Minnesota parks after closure of Upper Sioux Agency State Park

In the wake of the Upper Sioux Agency State Park closure in early 2024, when the park land was transferred to the Upper Sioux Community, the DNR now says it will allocate $1.55 million each to the city of Granite Falls, Renville County, and Yellow Medicine County for smaller park improvements.
The money and improvements are earmarked for certain parks within each of the entities’ borders, and the improvements must be those the agency sought during the DNR’s 2023-2024 public engagement period.

No Minnesota representative present at ‘wolf conversations’ national meeting

This past winter, a group of 25 individuals, with differing opinions ranging from advocacy for to staunch opposition to federal protections for wolves, gathered for a meeting of the minds at the National Wolf Conversation.
The three-day conference in January was funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and moderated by Constructive Conflict LLC with the goal of hosting conversations beyond blind opposition of the other side. And it was an experience that attendees say they found to be enriching.
