Ohio’s Vanessa Donato makes school history as she takes her aim to college shooting team

Vanessa Donato became the first student in school district history to go to college with a shotgun shooting sports scholarship.
After considering a number of college shotgun shooting programs, Donato chose to accept an offer from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. The Lindenwood Lions are an NCAA Division 1 team and considered one of the most prestigious shooting programs in the country. Donato began shooting on the North Ridgeville High School trap team when she was in the eighth grade.

Big youth shooting event slated for Cardinal Center in Marengo, Ohio

During 2022, the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) set a new participation record when more than 3,500 young shooters competed in the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action shooting Program (SASP) National Championships.
Although registration is still open for the 2023 SCTP and SASP National Championships, it looks like they will set new records again this year when they gather at Cardinal from July 4-15, according to Tom Davis, marketing and communications manager for the SSSF.

Ohio’s William Browning has a shot at 2024 Olympics

Doylestown native William Browning started shooting trap when he was only six years old. Since then, he has won state, regional, and national honors as a member of the Buckeye Chippewa youth shooting team at the Copley Trap Club. 
While he is proud of all his accomplishments to date, the 2022 Chippewa High School graduate has his sights set even higher. His goals are to become a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and to compete for Team U.S.A. shooting in the Olympics. He’s well on his way to accomplishing both.

Civilian Marksmanship Program offers public shooting, learning programs

Port Clinton, Ohio — For more than 100 years, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has offered shooting and training opportunities to the public at their facilities located at Camp Perry in Ohio.
The CMP was established in 1903 when Congress and the President established the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and National Matches. The impetus for its establishment was an idea promoted by President Teddy Roosevelt. He believed that marksmanship skills developed through regular practice and competition contributed to the nation’s defense.

Tournament anglers who cheated in Lake Erie walleye championship sentenced to jail time

Two tournament fishermen who pleaded guilty to felony cheating charges after they were disqualified from the Lake Erie Walleye Trail (LEWT) Championship in September of 2022 are headed to jail.  
Cuyahoga County Community Pleas Judge Steven Gall sentenced Jacob Runyan and Chase Cominsky to 10 days in the Cuyahoga County Jail and one and a half years’ probation, and the maximum fishing license suspension of three years.

Ohio’s Wengerd, 33, going into trapshooting Hall of Fame

J. Michael Wengerd, of Dundee, may be only 33 years old, but he has been breaking clay targets and earning top shooting honors for more than 20 years. Wengerd was a hunter when he was young, and started shooting trap in the fall of 2002 when a family friend, Aden Kaufman, first took him to a shoot in Coshocton. Kaufman was the owner and operator of Great Eastern Gun Club in Walnut Creek.

Two tournament anglers plead guilty in Lake Erie walleye scandal

Two tournament fishermen who were facing felony cheating charges after they were disqualified from the Lake Erie Walleye Trail (LEWT) Championship in September of 2022 pleaded guilty in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court on Monday, March 27.
Jacob Runyan, of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and Chase Cominsky, of Hermitage, Pa., pleaded guilty to two charges: cheating, a fifth-degree felony, and unlawful ownership of wild animals, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.

A court date has been set in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court for two tournament fishermen who are facing felony cheating charges after they were disqualified from the Lake Erie Walleye (LEWT) Trail Championship held here on Sept. 30, 2022, for allegedly cheating in the event.
