EHD continues its ugly spread to the north in Ohio

As Ohio’s statewide archery season approached and then opened on Sept. 28, hunters, property owners, and kayakers/canoeists began to encounter dead deer of all shapes and sizes, including trophy bucks, often near water sources.
Of those submitted for testing to the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, the cause of death as Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) has been confirmed in 20 counties.

Lake Erie’s walleye hatch again a solid one in Ohio waters

During the Oct. 2 meeting of the Ohio Wildlife Council, members were provided the results of the Sandusky Fisheries Research Station’s Western Basin trawling figures for the 2024 walleye hatch.
While this peek gives some indication of the relative strength of the hatch that will provide catchable, legal 15-plus-inch fish in 2026, the final trawling index figure that is used to set quotas for managing the species will not be released until Ontario biologists provide their results.

Plans in the works to buy another research vessel for Ohio State University’s Stone Lab

The 37-foot M/V Bio-Lab, a trap net-style boat built in 1947 by the Vermilion Engineering Company is the oldest research vessel in the Great Lakes.
According to a recent announcement, it may be getting company at Ohio State University’s Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory’s dock on South Bass Island, thanks to $2.5 million federal dollars that have been championed by Ohio U.S. Rep. Dave Joyce and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown. Plans are underway to construct another vessel to provide additional capacity for the education and research programs conducted at Stone Lab during the open water season.

All about minnow baits used for perch on Lake Erie

In 2012, when Hurricane Sandy went through the north coast, causing massive storm damage from high winds, emerald shiners were noticeably affected. Afterward, wild bait collectors could not find any wild schools near their normal nearshore locations.
Not only did the shiner shortage last the rest of the season, but the population of this preferred bait minnow has still not fully recovered. The past few years have been better, but at lower levels than desired.

Ohio charter captains briefed on happenings around Lake Erie

In late August, Ohio Sea Grant Director Chris Winslow, Fisheries Extension Specialist Tory Gabriel, and the Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory staff hosted 25 licensed charter captains to provide them with information that they can pass on to their clientele.   These workshops that began in 2014 are designed to provide active Lake Erie charter captains updates about the status of the fisheries from the Ohio Division of Wildlife, research being conducted, how current environmental conditions are affecting fish population and health, Stone Lab’s water quality monitoring program, and a tour of the biological field station.

Cases of EHD rising in Ohio deer as dry conditions persist

EHD, epizootic hemorrhagic disease, is an often-fatal affliction that can claim many deer when present locally, especially in northern latitudes that do not have annual outbreaks.
Due to chronic exposure to the disease, more deer in the south have acquired immunity to it with northern herds remaining more vulnerable. This year, with much of Ohio under drought conditions of various degrees, conditions have become favorable for the proliferation of the species of biting midges that carry the disease.

Perch spreaders losing ground to homemade perch ‘rigs’

More than 60 years ago when I began perch fishing with my dad and grandfather, the standard operating procedure was to use a wire spreader with two snelled hooks, each baited with an emerald shiner.
Each arm of the “perch spreader” at that time had a small nickel-finish blade at the end and the pre-tied, long-shank snelled hooks would also usually have a shiny spinner blade and red bead at the eye of the hook as an added attractant.

Ohio’s CWD management to see some change this year

During the 2024-25 deer hunting season, hunters will see some changes in how the Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) proceeds with chronic wasting disease (CWD) management in the wild deer herd.
For starters, vocal opposition by some landowners and sportsmen have led to a decision to cease targeted removal efforts in 2024-25 in favor of allowing hunters and landowners in the Deer Surveillance Area (DSA) of Hardin, Marion, and Wyandot counties enhanced opportunities to manage the deer population in their community.
