For those who incorrectly still insist that zebra mussels are good for “cleaning up the lake,” a newly published study in the December 2024 issue of Science of the Total Environment showed that their presence is harmful for yet another reason.
Previous studies have documented that populations of forage (bait) fish species and other prey items decline so much after zebra and quagga mussel populations climb that growth rates and ultimately the population of prized predatory game fish species that anglers target fall in response.
