Ohio aquaculture just a small part of Ohio’s ag

The mission of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program, which is headquartered at Ohio State University in Columbus and operates F. T. Stone Laboratory at Put-in- Bay, is education, research and outreach.
This summer, Ohio Sea Grant hosted a conference, called “Discover Ohio Aquaculture,” which brought producers, stakeholders, and decision-makers together to discuss the current state of Ohio’s aquaculture industry. There, members learned that 30 species of fish were raised in the state. One of the presenters then was Aquaculture Extension Specialist Nicole Wright, who gave a brief overview of the topic to an online audience called “Fish Farming, Food Systems, and Recreation Aquaculture in Ohio.”

Ohio Division of Wildlife biologist leads effort to define smallmouth bass movements on Lake Erie

During an Ohio Sea Grant-hosted webinar presentation on Nov. 21, Zak Slagle, one of the fisheries biologists at the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s Fisheries Research Station at Sandusky, shared some early observations of a smallmouth bass study that he is overseeing.
As part of the study, more than 200 smallmouth bass have received internal acoustic transmitters in order to plot their migration patterns in Lake Erie.

On June 27, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Dr. Richard Stumpf announced the agency’s annual forecast at Ohio State University’s F.T. Stone Laboratory at Put-in-Bay for the expected harmful algal bloom (HAB) severity index score for western Lake Erie this summer.

Division of Wildlife, Ducks Unlimited celebrate Ohio waterfowling

More than 120 waterfowl enthusiasts gathered Oct. 22-24 in Port Clinton, Ohio, to acknowledge and celebrate the long North American waterfowling tradition in western Lake Erie and its coastal marshes.
Hosted by the Lake Erie Marsh Association, Ducks Unlimited (DU), and the Ohio Division of Wildlife, many participants went on morning duck hunts, toured the Howard Marsh wetlands restoration project, and during meal times and social gatherings heard about the year’s accomplishments and updates by the host groups and volunteers.

Ice-free winters can be a problem on Lake Erie

On Oct. 17, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center predicted that the weak La Nina that has developed in the northern Pacific could produce above average precipitation and cooler temperatures in Washington and Oregon, where its influence is closest.
But, in the Great Lakes, NOAA expects higher precipitation and higher than normal temperatures – not a good recipe for ice fishing and other outdoor winter recreation.

Is it necessary to be there before daylight? Try this different approach during firearms deer season

For most of my deer hunting career, I made sure to get to my tree stand, ground blind, or cushion at my hunting location while under the cover of darkness during firearms season.
The rationale was to give nearby deer time to forget about any noises that I made, allow my scent to dissipate, cool down from my walk, organize my equipment, and get quiet well ahead of legal shooting time.

Commentary: Rules of gun safety important to follow regardless of experience

As another hunting season begins, I was abruptly reminded how easy one gun safety slip-up can quickly ruin a day afield.
After my second dove hunt of the season, I dismantled my antique 12-gauge U.S.S.R.-made Baikal over/under shotgun to clean it as I have done each time since I began hunting about 50 years ago. I usually push a wad of paper towel dipped in Hoppes No. 9 gunpowder solvent through my barrels to remove any fouling until they are smooth and protected from rust.

Stocking of lake sturgeon marks another milestone for the recovery of Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River

Ohio and federal wildlife officials and local agencies gathered at three locations on Oct. 2 to release 60 juvenile lake sturgeons into the Cuyahoga River.
The five dozen fish were each fitted with internal transmitters that will allow tracking of them with land-based receivers as they disperse within this Lake Erie tributary and throughout the Great Lakes. Twenty each were released at Merlins Wharf in Cleveland, Boston Mills at Cuyahoga National Park, and north of the Gorge Dam in Akron.
