Ohio State Trappers Association’s final fur auction draws good turnout

There was a good turnout for the Ohio State Trappers Association’s second and final fur auction of the season in Kidron on March 8. Some 60 trappers and hunters, some with multiple lots, sold 5,134 furbearer pelts to 13 buyers.    
OSTA fur auction coordinator Shawn Bentley wanted to express his appreciation to the volunteers who helped make this event run smoothly and give Ohio’s fur harvesters a place to sell their hard-earned catches.

Walleye spawning runs on Ohio’s Sandusky and Maumee rivers are right on the doorstep

Once that all danger of their fishing lines or themselves being swept away by chunks of ice and tree limbs drifting downriver, anglers began wading into or walking the shorelines of Western Basin rivers seeking walleyes.
The primary pair of rivers in Lake Erie that support robust spawning runs of first walleyes, and then white bass, are the Sandusky and Maumee rivers in Ohio. Certain sections of these rivers have the correct combination of depth, flow rates, and preferred rocky habitat used by these species to broadcast their eggs over.

‘Shedding’ some light on shed hunting

On Jan. 26, I saw that a fork-horn buck that I am acquainted with was missing its right antler.
While the larger, most active breeder bucks are often the first to drop their antlers as testosterone levels sharply drop after the rut has been finished for a sufficient period of time, this nonetheless alerted me that deer antler shedding season was now underway.

Diamond darter restoration a focused priority for Ohio DNR

In a recent note from Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker noting her agency’s 2024 accomplishments and 2025 initiatives, it includes as one of their “Focus Initiatives” as “diamond darter repatriation.”
The draft recovery plan for the Ohio-extirpated diamond darter that was completed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) identifies establishing new populations in currently unoccupied historical habitats as a critical component of the future survival of this species.

Ice still hanging on for Ohio anglers off Lake Erie’s islands

In what has become a welcomed surprise after years of brief or no opportunities for ice fishing on Lake Erie, hundreds of ice fishermen have been fishing off the islands daily since about mid-January.
As of the time of this writing, mainland ice is very limited, but another Arctic blast is underway. It is not common, but not unheard of, for fishable ice to form in February.

A doe with a muzzleloader helps thin Ohio’s South Bass Island deer herd

Since I moved off Ohio’s South Bass Island, aka Put-in-Bay, after my retirement in 2011, I have watched as the island’s deer population jumped from a couple of family units to numbers approaching the limit of long-term sustainability.
The deer population has increased to levels that are now testing the tolerance of some of the island’s residents.

In an ever-changing ice fishing scenario, many anglers who were on a hair trigger awaiting the now more uncommon opportunity to get onto Lake Erie’s ice may have gotten their wish granted if they responded quickly.   
A far-reaching polar vortex that delivered arctic weather in the form of an unprecedented 10 inches of snow in New Orleans also quickly froze Lake Erie in mid-January.

More than 1,500 pelts changed hands at Ohio fur auction

As Ohio State Trappers Association (OSTA) fur auction coordinator Shawn Bentley drove though the heavy snowfall in Butler County, he wondered if he should have canceled the first sale of the season in the name of safety and attendance.
However, it was a good thing that the Bucyrus auction proceeded as planned, as about 20 sellers who braved the roads offered their lots of fur to five to six buyers as OSTA volunteers helped to run the event as smoothly as ever.
