Ohio Sea Grant’s charter captain conference coming March 1

In a series only interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ohio Sea Grant’s Extension Program Leader and Fisheries Educator Tory Gabriel is inviting anyone interested in Lake Erie fisheries and boating to register for the 44th Ohio Sea Grant Charter Captain Conference, scheduled for March 1. One does not have to be a charter captain to attend.

Mainland ice on Ohio’s Lake Erie likely finished, islands still a go for now

In an ever-changing ice fishing scenario, many anglers who were on a hair trigger awaiting the now more uncommon opportunity to get onto Lake Erie’s ice may have gotten their wish granted if they responded quickly.
A far-reaching polar vortex that delivered arctic weather in the form of an unprecedented 10 inches of snow in New Orleans also quickly froze Lake Erie in mid-January.

More than 1,500 pelts changed hands at Ohio fur auction

As Ohio State Trappers Association (OSTA) fur auction coordinator Shawn Bentley drove though the heavy snowfall in Butler County, he wondered if he should have canceled the first sale of the season in the name of safety and attendance.
However, it was a good thing that the Bucyrus auction proceeded as planned, as about 20 sellers who braved the roads offered their lots of fur to five to six buyers as OSTA volunteers helped to run the event as smoothly as ever.

Do you follow proper ice-fishing etiquette? Here’s what to consider

With ice fishing well underway on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods (LOTW), the region’s tourism bureau thought that it would be timely and wise to list some common-sense rules of ice fishing etiquette for those who never learned, have forgotten, or choose to ignore those rules.
While some of these practices may be well-known to experienced hard-water fishermen, newer participants to this popular winter sport may truly not yet know when they are committing errors on the ice.

Ice anglers running full tilt in Ohio after sudden cold blast

It is never certain how long it will last, but at the time of this writing on Jan. 19, ice fishing is underway in certain locations on Ohio’s north coast.
Going from temperatures that were over 50 degrees after Christmas that allowed the Miller Boat Line to continue ferry service to South Bass (Put-in-Bay) until Jan. 2 to frozen water as far as the eye could see a week later was a weather surprise that few saw coming.

Another ice-fishing season is in limbo for Ohio anglers

With air temperatures reaching more than 50 degrees during the end of December, prospects for Ohio anglers who like to ice fish are once again looking uncertain.
While early ice is clearly off the table, there is still plenty of time for local bodies of water to freeze yet this winter and provide some later hard water action.

Ohio’s South Bass anglers eager for minnows get their shiners delivered

On Jan. 2, the last day of the Miller Boat Line ferry service, a flatbed truck from A-N-J Bait carrying tanks of emerald shiners arrived on South Bass Island at the request of dozens of the island’s winter anglers.
As a new forecast for some weeks of frigid weather was finally announced by local meteorologists, these anglers are hoping to use this preferred bait fish species when the lake freezes and allows ice fishing to commence.

Study sheds light on mercury in walleyes, perch

For those who incorrectly still insist that zebra mussels are good for “cleaning up the lake,” a newly published study in the December 2024 issue of Science of the Total Environment showed that their presence is harmful for yet another reason.
Previous studies have documented that populations of forage (bait) fish species and other prey items decline so much after zebra and quagga mussel populations climb that growth rates and ultimately the population of prized predatory game fish species that anglers target fall in response.

Anomaly? Surveys show a below-average hatch of walleyes in Western and Central Basins of Lake Erie

On Dec. 12, the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife released the combined results of Lake Erie’s fisheries agency’s trawling surveys. An annual index is produced from data collected from approximately 80 sampling locations in Ohio, Michigan, and Ontario waters, expressed in fish per hectare (ha), an area equal to 2.471 acres.
