Rare Susquehanna River fish in Pennsylvania found to be one of a kind

In an attempt to rescue a rare darter in the lower Susquehanna River, a Penn State research team, working with the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, has determined that the fish is a distinct subspecies found nowhere else.
And that makes the effort to restore its population even more important, the researchers say.

Seed survival story: How trees keep ‘friends’ close, ‘enemies’ guessing

Around the globe, forests are facing unprecedented challenges. They’re grappling with wildfires, diseases, droughts and deforestation. The survival of these great forests hinges on their ability to regrow — and for many trees, a process called “masting” is key to this regeneration.
Masting — the unpredictable boom-and-bust cycle of seed production — can have profound consequences for plant populations and the food webs that are built on their seeds. But the complex relationship between seed-production cycles and seed consumers and dispersers has been poorly understood.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Pennsylvania Game Commission sponsors dirt-track races to promote hunting license sales

A reader called our office last week to report what he believed to be an indiscretion by the Game Commission. The agency, he said, is sponsoring a dirt track race car!
This on top of “wasting all that money” sending employees to the National Wild Turkey Federation Conference in Nashville. The money could be better spent on habitat, he added.
Turns out the commission actually is sponsoring a race car – along with two races at Selinsgrove and Port Royal speedways in Snyder and Juniata counties, in September. The events, intended to promote hunting season and hunting license sales, are called “Race to Hunting Season.”

Commissioner selection process altered slightly in Pennsylvania

The process for a citizen to be chosen to serve on the boards of the Pennsylvania Game and Fish & Boat commissions has been altered slightly.
A recent announcement made by Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration indicated that the long-standing role of the Governor’s Advisory Council for Hunting, Fishing and Conservation to recommend the most qualified finalists for the governor to pick from to fill commissioner seats will be eliminated.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Recapping a busy recent period in Pennsylvania’s outdoors

Just before this issue went to press, we learned that the Game Commission recently charged six southwestern Pennsylvania residents with hundreds of wildlife violations after they admitted to illegally shooting and killing between 100 and 200 deer in six months “just for fun.”

Study helps pinpoint where to find destructive feral swine in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Feral swine are considered one of the top invasive species of concern in North America because of the damage they do to agricultural and natural systems. To best manage them, resource management agencies need to know more precisely where and when to implement control methods.
A new study by a Penn State-led research team developed a method to help guide control efforts in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Early-nesting ducks fooled by climate, land-use change in Prairie Pothole Region

Each year approximately 10 million waterfowl fly north to their breeding grounds in the Prairie Pothole Region of North America, but the landscape that greets them has changed.
Weather patterns and agricultural practices have significantly transformed the pothole-dotted native grasslands that waterfowl have used for thousands of years.
These changes have resulted in some waterfowl proliferating while others decline.
