Second species of ramp, or wild leek, found in Pennsylvania

The presence of a second species of ramp, Allium burdickii — commonly known as narrow-leaved wild leek — has been documented in southwest Pennsylvania by a team of Penn State researchers in a new study.
This plant species never before has been documented in the state, and the researchers suggest the discovery shows a need to protect remaining populations of the plant. The more common and well-known broader-leafed ramp species, Allium tricoccum, is widespread in the state and often collected.

Study to test effectiveness of Pennsylvania riparian buffers

At a time when Pennsylvania is largely counting on riparian buffers to achieve water-quality improvements needed to meet the state’s obligations for cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay, a multidisciplinary Penn State research team is studying whether the agricultural pollution-prevention devices are working properly.

Notes off a soiled cuff: A mountain lion roaming in Centre County, Pa.? Not so sure

I have been writing about the belief that wild mountain lions still exist in Pennsylvania for 45 years, and this is my latest chapter. A neighbor’s trailcam captured this image one night in early July in Benner Township, Centre County, and friends of mine believe it’s a mountain lion roaming the territory of the Nittany Lions near State College.

A quick chat with American Sportfishing Association president Glenn Hughes

For nearly 90 years, the American Sportfishing Association – commonly referred to as ASA – has been leading the way for sportfishing’s future.
Glenn Hughes has been president of the association, based in New Alexandria, Virginia, for more than five years. Under his guidance, the group’s focus is on five pillars – clean water, abundant fisheries, access to those fish, trade and commerce and increasing participation in fishing. When we caught up with Hughes for a brief chat recently, he wanted to talk about the last one.

Notes off a soiled cuff: A lot going on in Pennsylvania’s outdoors

Things have changed a lot in the last decade or so as millions of dollars in Marcellus shale natural gas receipts from under state game lands have flowed into Game Commission coffers.
As a result, the agency doesn’t need to raise hunting license fees in the foreseeable future. So, it will be interesting to see whether legislators give the commission the power to increase fees on its own.

Rare Susquehanna River fish in Pennsylvania found to be one of a kind

In an attempt to rescue a rare darter in the lower Susquehanna River, a Penn State research team, working with the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, has determined that the fish is a distinct subspecies found nowhere else.
And that makes the effort to restore its population even more important, the researchers say.

Seed survival story: How trees keep ‘friends’ close, ‘enemies’ guessing

Around the globe, forests are facing unprecedented challenges. They’re grappling with wildfires, diseases, droughts and deforestation. The survival of these great forests hinges on their ability to regrow — and for many trees, a process called “masting” is key to this regeneration.
Masting — the unpredictable boom-and-bust cycle of seed production — can have profound consequences for plant populations and the food webs that are built on their seeds. But the complex relationship between seed-production cycles and seed consumers and dispersers has been poorly understood.
