Notes off a soiled cuff: There’s a new sheriff in town as president of Pennsylvania Game Commission board

“There’ a new sheriff in town.” That’s the message Kristen Schnepp-Giger, president of the Game Commission board, conveyed at the agency’s recent meeting.
Under her leadership, not only did the commissioners accept the agency staff’s 16% increase in doe licenses for sale this fall, but she announced there would be no challenges to the allocations.

‘Manureshed’ management in Susquehanna River basin key for water quality of Chesapeake Bay

A novel study by a Penn State-led research team suggests that “manureshed” management in the Susquehanna River basin could make a big difference in the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay.
The Susquehanna delivers half the fresh water in the Chesapeake Bay and about 40% of the nitrogen pollution, 20% of the phosphorus pollution and a heavy load of sediment pollution.

Reader sees toxic results in Pennsylvania from East Palestine train derailment

Reader Richard Eiler was nice about it, but he wanted us to know we’d been misled. Our story in the last issue, headlined “No fish, wildlife effects in Pa. from train derailment,” had clearly annoyed him.
The resident of South Beaver Township, Beaver County, lives about four miles, as the crow flies, from the crash site where spilled toxic chemicals were burned Feb. 3 at East Palestine, Ohio. He has seen signs of the drifting chemicals’ deadly impacts with his own eyes.

Penn State study shows state’s private forest landowners want to use prescribed fire for management

Managers of public forests in Pennsylvania have been using controlled burns to manage state-owned tracts to promote tree species such as oak, reduce the growth of invasive plant species and even reduce tick populations for more than a decade.
Now a study by Penn State researchers indicates that owners of private forest land in the state would like to use prescribed fire to manage their woods, too.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Thoughts on CWD-detecting dogs and more from PA’s top stories

Readers have criticized the Pennsylvania Game Commission for not conducting research on chronic wasting disease as it has spread across the state.
But the agency – through its unique partnership called Wildlife Futures with the veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania – is on the cutting edge of one promising, emerging detection protocol.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Thoughts on deer, elk, anti-hunters and game and fish commisioners

Last year, the state of Michigan instituted mandatory reporting of deer harvests – a move many want to see made in Pennsylvania. From early returns, it appears that hunters are generally accepting the new system, and the state has been overestimating its hunter deer harvest for years. No surprise there.

Pennsylvania deer harvest ranks high nationally once again

The National Deer Association recently issued its Deer Report 2023, and Pennsylvania ranked high in a number of important categories. It was based on 2021 deer harvest reports.
In the report, Pennsylvania ranked fourth in total buck harvest in the country, with 145,320, far behind Texas, at 447,972 Michigan, 223,476 and Wisconsin at 153,112. Missouri was fifth with 143,815.
