Ohio Division of Wildlife’s online app comes up short on sunrise, sunset tables

The Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife’s much ballyhooed smart phone app does have a bunch of useful information, which is why both my wife and I have installed it on our cell phones.
We can buy our licenses and tags online, check the status of what we’ve bought (though my state duck stamp, HIP registration, and deer permit are not included. But I digress), scroll through some of the agency’s latest press releases, record a muskie catch, enter a Fish Ohio application, report wildlife sightings, and make a tour of other ODNR agencies.

National shooting matches at Ohio’s Camp Perry go high-tech

Steve Cooper shuffled his feet across the thick, course field of grass, also looking down and across the massive field of green that helps make up the world’s second-largest outdoor shooting range.
“To think,” said Cooper, “this is the same stuff as when Camp Perry started hosting the National Matches in 1907. That grass is over 100 years old.”

Walleyes feeding on walleyes? It happens sometimes

Cannibalism is a very real deal in the animal world. Grizzly bear boars have no compunction about eating any cubs they might happen to steal away from an overpowered sow.
So, it seems, neither do walleyes. Reports of Lake Erie’s abundant large walleyes devouring their even more profuse smaller relations are trickling in, particularly in Ohio’s far share of the Central Basin. Then again, these same walleyes have cast their glassy stares at their close cousins, the yellow perch.

Jeff Frischkorn: Feral hog hunting is as basic as it gets

It wasn’t so much being an odd question, though it did make my eyebrows furrow.
I was stumped, and not for the first time related to such a thought, either.
“How many wild hogs have you accounted for?” asked my brother, Rich. “Twenty-five,” was my reply.
No, maybe it’s 30. Perhaps more. Maybe less. Nor could I exactly acknowledge the number of years I’ve hunted wild/feral hogs/boars.

Dogs and algae-laden water don’t mix

Exercising bird dog breeds via “water work” is great for keeping or getting a canine in shape for the hunting season.
What the activity should not experience, however, is for a dog to become ill even to death by the activity. And yet both of those possibilities exist should a dog be endangered through the ingestion of what’s commonly called “blue-green” algae.

The do’s and don’ts of RV camping

After going through a trio of campers, borrowing a few others, and staying everywhere in them from primitive pull-over state forest land to deluxe private venues, I’m here to say I much prefer the latter.
These fancy accommodations come with caveats, of course. Among them is at least one I was unfamiliar with. That is, until I was enlightened and indoctrinated by a professional husband-wife RVing team.

Mentor, Ohio, wetland preservation gets $500K in help

A pair of connecting Lake County-based natural areas has yielded a seamless synergy of wetlands preservation.
Joining forces for a number of years now are the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Ohio DNR, and the City of Mentor. The first entity is the actual owner of the 801-acre Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve. Ohio has long been a contributor to the marsh’s well-being – a point that saw additional aid June 26.

Film, “Mending the Line,” spotlights redemptive value of fishing

It isn’t so much that life imitates art – or vice-versa – as it is that both are parallel tracks headed in the same direction.
And when you look at them out to the horizon where they merge, they appear to be a single line. All of which is a roundabout way of addressing fishing in movies. Or movies about fishing. Again two tracks, the same direction.

Dash-mounted camera captures young bear bouncing off sheriff’s patrol vehicle in Northeast Ohio

It doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone how tough bears – even juvenile males – are, not even when they have a run-in with two-ton-plus Ford SUVs.
That is exactly what happened the evening of June 9 when a black bear came out of nowhere to clip the passenger-side front panel of a Geauga County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle in Ohio. The 18-second episode provided by the department was captured on the vehicle’s dash-mounted camera as the Ford was on routine patrol in Munson Township.
