Mentor Lagoons in Ohio adds fuel docks in harbor

The fuel thirst that has plagued Mentor Lagoons boaters has been assuaged. Or soon will be, anyway.
The work on installing a pair of 3,000-gallon above-ground steel fuel tanks and respective fueling pumps was nearly complete at the time of this writing. And while not finished for the Memorial Day holiday, they almost certainly will be discharging fuel by the Fourth of July holiday to the hundreds of boats that use the Mentor Lagoons on a weekly basis.

Ohio could do better for traveling sportsmen

Maybe the clearest way of understanding that Ohio is sometimes headed in the wrong direction is seen with the first – and last – rest stops on Interstate-71 just north of Cincinnati.

Traveling north after (gratefully) leaving Cincinnati’s abysmal traffic in the rearview mirror, my wife, Bev, and I pulled into the state’s refurbished rest area. Small and just adequate, it hardly could find itself noted for being much more than clean pull-off to do one’s business. No, it is not a visitors’ center.

Ohio’s spring turkey hunters post highest success rates since 2018

Turkey hunters fooled a lot of gobblers – and even some bearded hens – into believing they were the real deal during Ohio’s recently concluded spring turkey season.
In all, Ohio’s turkey hunters killed 15,673 birds checked from April 22 through May 28, and that includes the 1,823 turkeys tallied during the two-day youth turkey season April 15-16.

Money directed toward Ohio’s Mentor Harbor/Lagoons

After a century of being battered by Lake Erie waves and erosion, the famed Mentor Harbor/Lagoons has a “white knight” riding to its rescue.
In mid-March, Ohio General Assembly members state Rep. Jamie Callender, R-Concord Township, and state Sen. Jerry Cirino, R-Kirtland, addressed the three-member Lake County Commissioners that the Ohio DNR will be the conduit for $500,000 in legislatively approved money for the so-named “Mentor Erosion Project.”

Ohio’s early turkey kill this spring in good standing

Data supplied by the Ohio Division of Wildlife appears to demonstrate the state’s turkey flock is on the road to recovery, thanks in some measure to tightening of bag limits.
It is important to note, too, that the totals shown for this year and last year includes the results of their respective two-day, youth-only turkey-hunting seasons. This year, youth hunters were blessed with absolutely ideal turkey-hunting weather.

Jeff Frischkorn: A boy, a dog, and the Creek

Every boy needs a dog and every dog needs a boy.
I have Molly and she has me, and we both have the Creek.
In March, the Creek belongs exclusively to me, though. It is then that I fish for steelhead trout, typically starting with bait and then transferring my flag over to one of three 7-weight fly rods (I like to alternate between them, but I digress.) To the fly line’s leader I add a fly that I have assembled from scratch. But again, I am getting ahead of myself.

Ohio youth turkey hunt sees significant bump in harvest

The sun shone and the stars were aligned for 1,823 youths aged 17 and under on April 15 and April 16.
That’s how many youths were successful – thus the number of bearded birds taken – during Ohio’s recently concluded statewide youth-only wild turkey hunting season. Participants were required to be accompanied by a non-hunting adult.
