Ohio group gets backing of senator in elk reintroduction

A wild animal not seen on the Ohio landscape in 183 years may make a comeback if a group of outdoor enthusiasts and state Sen. Shane Wilkin have their way.
The animal in question is elk.
Once plentiful in the state, the last wild Ohio elk was killed in 1841. Sen. Wilkin represents more than nine counties in southern Ohio, which would likely become home to any wild elk reintroduced to the state.

Ohio wildlife officer’s quick thinking helped save child’s life after mowing accident

Quick thinking, proper training, and being “in the right place at the right time” recently earned wildlife officer Jesse Janosik a Valor Award from Ohio DNR Director Mary Mertz.
Officer Janosik, who is assigned to Columbiana County, was on routine patrol north of Lisbon on July 18 this year when an alert from the sheriff’s office came over his radio that a child was severely injured in a mowing accident.

Three Ohio fish hatcheries getting much-needed upgrades

Three of Ohio’s six fish hatcheries are receiving much-needed upgrades, ODNR Division of Wildlife Hatcheries Administrator Chris French told Ohio Wildlife Council members on Oct. 2.
Improvements to hatcheries at London, Senecaville, and Hebron should restore, secure, and expand fish production at the three and provide greater flexibility on what is raised in each, French said.

The Ohio DNR disputes stories that circulated on social media and broadcast news regarding flooding at Lake White during rains associated with Hurricane Helene.
Those rumors and stories alleged the lake’s dam and flood gates did not operate properly, leading to severe flash-flooding at the north end. The dam is at the 337-acre lake’s south end.

Severe drought leading to potential fire danger in Ohio

As drought conditions worsen across Ohio, so does the threat of wildfires.
As of Sept. 20, 37 southern, eastern, and central Ohio counties judged under extreme and exceptional drought conditions on the Ohio Drought Monitor Map were also under an outdoor open burning ban issued by the state fire marshal. That number was likely to increase weekly.
