Ohio research aims to better understand the state’s black bears

Where do black bears like to hang out? What do they eat? Where and when do they breed and how often? How many cubs do they generally have? Where do they go to hibernate? How long do they live?
Those are some of the questions the Ohio Division of Wildlife hopes to answer so the public will be better informed and more able to avoid future conflicts as the number of bears increases in the state, according to Katie Dennison, furbearer biologist with the division.

Ohio’s Deer Creek in crosshairs of potential new development

Once again, there is controversy over where Madison County, Ohio, should put a wastewater treatment plant. And once again, the controversy involves Madison Lake State Park.

Fishing tournament changes could be coming to Ohio in ’25

New regulations governing certain fishing tournaments in Ohio may be on the horizon if the Ohio Division of Wildlife gets its way.
Division of Wildlife Inland Fisheries Administrator Rich Zweifel told state wildlife council members in July the division will seek additions to the Ohio Administrative Code in the next year to officially define a fishing “tournament” – as opposed to a fishing “derby” or other similar activities.

Rare rattlesnake species found in Ohio

It is a timid little reptile that has received more than its share of publicity recently.
News stories about the eastern massasauga rattlesnake found during the Ohio DNR’s annual snake survey in May have spread across the country and into popular websites like Google News. While the snake is not common and is rarely even seen in the wild, it is found in a few select locations in the state, according to Kristin Stanford, wildlife diversity coordinator for the ODNR Division of Wildlife.
