Ken Fitz, former executive administrator of law enforcement for the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife, died on Feb. 1 following a lengthy illness. He was 61.
Fitz hailed from Sandusky and worked for the division for 29 years in a variety of capacities, according to Kandy Klosterman, the division’s current executive administrator of law enforcement.

Detailed text messages and a widely-circulated photo proved to be the undoing of Christopher “C.J.” Alexander in a landmark deer poaching case.
Alexander, 28, of Wilmington, Ohio, is serving six months at STAR Community Justice Center in Clinton County for the illegal taking of a record 18-point buck on Nov. 9, 2023. Alexander killed the buck on property where he did not have permission to hunt and without a hunting license. He then took elaborate steps to conceal the crime, according to information from the ODNR Division of Wildlife (DOW).

More than 4,300 acres – mostly in Egypt Valley Wildlife Area in Belmont County – was nominated for oil and gas drilling on Dec. 18, according to the Ohio Oil and Gas Land Management Commission.
Under Ohio’s 2011 law that permitted oil and gas extraction from state parks and wildlife areas, a parcel of land must first be nominated for drilling. If the nomination is approved by the commission, the parcel is open for bidding by various drilling companies.

More than 30 acres at Egypt Valley Wildlife Area in Belmont County are open to fracking, following action by the Ohio Oil and Gas Land Management Commission on Dec. 9.
A winning bid to lease the parcel’s mineral rights was submitted by Gulfport Appalachia LLC. Gulfport Appalachia was also awarded the lease for nearly five acres along State Route 800 in Monroe County. That parcel is owned by the Ohio Department of Transportation (DOT).

Efforts by a state legislator and local officials to reintroduce elk into parts of southern Ohio are opposed by the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife (DOW).
Following an Oct. 30 meeting initiated by state Sen. Shane Wilkin to gather input on elk reintroduction, the wildlife division issued a position statement on the subject that laid out multiple reasons why it shouldn’t happen.

If coyotes have become more acclimated to people in Ohio, the critters are even more so in Las Vegas, Nev., where I have a vacation home.
