Ohio Division of Wildlife opposes elk reintroduction

The Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife opposes the reintroduction of elk into Ohio because of what it terms as an “unacceptable” risk to motorists, and crop damage concerns. (Photo by Bob Drieslein)

Efforts by a state legislator and local officials to reintroduce elk into parts of southern Ohio are opposed by the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife (DOW).
Following an Oct. 30 meeting initiated by state Sen. Shane Wilkin to gather input on elk reintroduction, the wildlife division issued a position statement on the subject that laid out multiple reasons why it shouldn’t happen.
