Annual Perry County, Ohio, kids fishing event another success

Despite a long-range weekend forecast for stormy weather in Perry County, Ohio, that called for heavy rain, the annual Perry County Sheriff’s Office Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs (HOFNOD) day took place Saturday, June 14, without a single drop of rain making an appearance.
All the participants qualified for the free hot dog and chips lunch that began at 11 a.m., but that was far from the extent of free items awaiting the young anglers.

Ohio clubs bridge the cultural divide through fishing

In Northeast Ohio, two bass fishing clubs – one comprised of predominantly white anglers, the other predominantly black – have come together, not just to share the water, but to forge a perfect union. Their story is not limited to fishing; it’s about camaraderie, breaking barriers, and proving that passion for the sport of fishing can bridge any divide.

Unique tourney on Ohio’s Burr Oak Lake never disappoints for bass anglers

The seventh annual Blue Rock Big Bass Bash at Ohio’s Burr Oak Lake had a full field of 50 boats for the sixth consecutive year when the tournament took place on Sunday, April 27. A foggy morning gave way to a sky that looked like it had invented the color blue as the team tournament format began at 7 a.m.
Instead of one winner at the day’s end weigh-in, the Bash awards a first place angler and a runner-up at the bottom of the hour for eight hours. The Run ‘N Gun Bass Busters have conducted this outstanding event from its outset seven years ago.

A Q-and-A with pro angler and Ohioan Bill Lowen in the midst of a bounce-back season

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Bill Lowen entered the 2025 tournament season carrying the memory of his disappointing performance on the 2024 Bassmaster Elite tour. Instead of focusing on a bass on the end of his line, he feared the weight at his line’s end could be his career.
“My finish for the 2024 season standings was the worst of my career,” acknowledged the Brookville, Indiana, resident who is a Buckeye native. Lowen explained that his performance on the Elite tour had started taking a downward trend after he secured his first blue trophy at Pickwick Lake in 2021.

Southeast Ohio anglers turn their passion into business

Anglers constantly tinker with tackle in an attempt to outwit their competition, be it fish or fisherman.
Most times these adjustments are performed on already-manufactured products. However, access to materials and equipment has given rise to garage “factories” where anglers with another full-time job have turned to making everything from baits to rods. Southeast Ohio is a hotbed for these fishing entrepreneurs.

Commentary: After a long Ohio winter, eyes are on spring fishing trips

Seven inches of snow, a constant 35 mile per hour wind, and temps that sound like shoe sizes for a fourth-grade basketball team combined to pull the plug on the electricity in Bearfield Township, Ohio, where I live. When your house depends on electricity for heat as well as light, a power outage allows me to put what American Electric Power (AEP) calls a “plan of action” into motion.
My action plan includes multiple layers of clothing, insulated boots, wool socks, flashlights, and a fireplace loaded with seasoned wood.

Commentary: Ohio’s Columbus National Fishing Expo never disappoints

My February has meant the National Fishing Expo for the last several years. I represent Ohio Outdoor News as I sell subscriptions for the company. However, the Expo has become more than a three-day job for me.
It’s a family reunion where I don’t have to feed anyone. It’s handshakes and laughter with old friends and a chance to form ‘once a year’ new ones. While I never seem to have a chance to explore the show, talking about the magazine with Expo visitors is a great opportunity.
