Commentary: Remembering Marty Dashiell and a life cut much too short

Doug Clifford thought it was all a joke when ESPN’s Marty Dashiell first phoned him interested in doing a piece on Fishing 101. The two men ended up becoming close friends through the years. Dashiell unfortunately passed away just recently, rekindling memories of the friendship for Clifford. (File photo)

I met Marty via a phone call forwarded to my classroom at the Crooksville K-8 School. The school secretary paged me with “you have a phone call from ‘tnse’ or something like that.” It was week 10 of the football season and week nine had not been a joyous one.
