Public invited to field day highlighting forest management at Iowa’s Volga River State Recreation Area
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Iowa State University Extension will be showcasing various forestry practices at Volga River State Recreation Area as part of a public field day, on May 21.
Field day activities include reviewing the recent clear cut, discussions on black walnuts, chronic wasting disease and ruffed grouse, proper planting, pruning and stock selection and participate in a campground planting project at Volga River State Park.
Walleye season opens May 4 on Iowa’s Great Lakes
The 148th walleye fishing season officially opens May 4 at Iowa’s Spirit Lake, and East and West Okoboji lakes.
“Walleye sampling this spring shows a very robust and healthy population,” said Mike Hawkins, fisheries biologist for the Iowa DNR. “Iowa Great Lakes experienced a record setting early ice out date. Ice duration also set a record with the lakes iced up for only 50 to 58 days, 20 days shorter than any other year since 1916 when record keeping began. Water temperatures remain on a normal trajectory for a good opener.”

Minnesota DNR seeking public comment on Lac qui Parle WMA master plan update
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources invites people interested in the Lac qui Parle Wildlife Management Area to share their thoughts on a draft update of the master plan for the popular hunting, fishing and wildlife-watching destination in southwestern Minnesota.
The updated master plan will be used to guide management of the WMA’s prairies and grasslands, wetlands, lakes, brushlands, shrubs and forests, and will identify management goals, objectives, and strategies for the WMA for the next 10 years. The previous management plan for the area was developed in 1997.

Lake Erie provided majority of Fish Ohio catches in 2023
Fish Ohio records from Lake Erie show 3,916 catches of trophy fish from 17 different species were submitted in 2023, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
The Fish Ohio program celebrates amazing catches of 25 species of fish. On Lake Erie, popular species sought by anglers include walleyes, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, and channel catfish. Those who reel in a qualifying catch receive the commemorative Fish Ohio pin for their first entry and a Master Angler pin for catching qualifiers of four different species in the same year.

Ohio DNR invites public to learn more about CWD in the state during April open houses
The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife invites the public to attend an open house to learn more about chronic wasting disease (CWD) in whitetailed deer.
CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects white-tailed deer. During the open houses, Division of Wildlife staff will discuss the biology of CWD, test results from the 2023-24 deer hunting season, efforts to slow the spread of the disease, and future management plans. A question-and-answer session follows the presentation.

Hunting, trapping dates approved in Ohio for fall 2024
The Ohio Wildlife Council approved Ohio’s 2024-25 hunting and trapping seasons for white-tailed deer, migratory birds, small game, and furbearers during its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, April 10, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
